The Song of Durin.

I'm going to have to second that. There's something beautiful about music done with one instrument and a guy singing when done right.

well i mean, i usually play music that sounds epic when I'm playing DF. Or eddie vedder or whatever I can come up with, maybe some Thomas Newman.

But c'mon.

We all know the truth. Everything in DF can be boiled down to two links.

This.
And this.

Eh, I prefer ambient/instrumental music to omgMETAL! It fits a lot nicer with playing Dwarf Fortress imo.

Noise - Bronzemurder

Noise - Boatmurdered

Dwarf Fortress (Orchestral)

HOMM IV (Grass Theme)

Unreal OST - Shared Dig (Rrajigar Mines)

Unreal OST - Chizra (Elisha Remix)

Unreal OST - Harobed Village (Elisha Remix)

Unreal RTNP OST - Journey

I could probably link the OSTs of several games with really atmospheric music all day but the list would get too long.. ::)

Also Cove just because UO.

I find that Dr. Mario fits quite well with what happens in dwarf fortress.

this was the intro for a brazilian soap opera that aired a few years ago. it wasn't terrible, but i was never into soap operas. i did enjoy the music, though
it's the instrumental version of this song, and although the song is cool to, the voice sort of breaks the df vibe

I've never heard anything so insane as the original DF music track. It is an utterly hopeless melancholy, as if what you're doing makes no sense in the first place, and will ultimately destroy you and your entire civilization. When you first hear it, you don't know for sure, but you can feel that your doom was sealed hundreds of years ago.

Cannot seem to find it anywhere on YouTube, so no samples.  According to the page, what we have here is the Koto Ensemble of the Ikuta School, Japan.  Three tracks, roughly 46 minutes, and very much in the feel of the original DF music, albeit with an eastern bent.  Set these three to loop in Audacious, and mute DF itself.

Also good for... well, everything but headbanging and sex.  :D

EDIT - Struck by brilliance a few minutes ago:  if you have a player that can handle SPC or RSN files, go fetch the soundtrack to the SNES game King Arthur's World.  Better still, also fetch the rom for the game itself.

Victory Song by Ensiferum is definitely for sieges.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Once I can go to my enemies, there is Tulimyrsky (Firestorm) by Moonsorrow and Gods of war arise by Amon Amarth. Or they would fit a siege I lost pretty well.

The hero by Amon Amarth is the song to play when you die in adventure mode.

Pink Floyd, Sorrow. Don't know why, it just stirs awesomeness in me. I unfortunately can't find the release version ANYWHERE on the internet, only the live version which (IMO) don't have the same effect. So if you've got a copy of Echoes - Best of Pink Floyd or Momentary Lapse of Reason around, please have a listen to it. Such an awesome song. Any song about 8mins long ending in a 3min guitar solo is awesome anyway, then when you factor in the REST of the song + Dave Gilmour it's just AWESOME.

No idea why it's DF music. It just IS. One day I was playing DF and it came on from random shuffle and... well.

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...
Link for full quote. 'tis mighty funny.

Yesterday, I vaugely remembered a tune. It was an infectious tune that I couldn't get out of my head, so I dug it up.
It turned out to be the combat theme in Heroes of Might and Magic Three, and now I play it during every siege. It's awesome.
Also, this.
