My food stockpiles overflow
« on: November 06, 2008, 01:36:06 pm »

so, i just set all 9 of my 5x5 fields to fallow (2 above ground, 7 below). ive got 28,576 food (6446 of that drink) for 225 dwarves (one of them a king). i have over 17 full stockpiles (sized 11x11). 6597 prepared meals and still cooking. heck, theres 4656 plump helmets in stockpile as it is, and over a thousand strawberries.

thing is, im getting a bit sick of just how big the food sprawl is getting, where i have to designate new stockpiles to get food harvested. im keeping the 2 butcher-shops running, as i need the leather and bone. ive got multiple stills on repeat, and at least one legendary brewer(who also got a mood and went legendary stonecrafter).

it now spring of the 12th year of the fort. im hunting for adamantium in the depths, growing tower-caps, and starting my mega-projects. no sand, no webs near the chasm, and no flux(not even from trade).

so, heres a question- how long do you think before im forced to start farming again?

Heh. This probably constitutes a good kind of problem to have.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

9 of my 5x5 fields

There's your problem right there.

I always start with as few farms as possible; even 4 3x1 plots is a good start. Don't add it all in big chunks.

Remember, it's better to be starving than overflowed, because that way you always get rid of the food.

You have at least 15 years before food stocks should begin getting refilled.

meh. the fields arent farmed year-round usualy. i normaly have the 6 below and later 2 above. 2 for plump helmets, 1 for wheat, 1 for sweat pods, 1 for pigtails, 1 for quarry bushes. the dimple cups get on one of the other fields in winter. aboveground... well, 2 types of dye, rope reed, and stawberries (no sunberries yet, i doubt the elves have any on this world).

yeah, i have way too much thread/cloth from plants as it is, and i have to trade for silk. on the upside, i can afford whatever i want. always good to have a stockpile where a ton of stuff is only 20 distance from the depot.

I've traded a barrel with a 41-stack of mastercrafted plump helmet roast for a full suit of steel armor. Surprised the hell out of me. After that the jewelers and blacksmiths went to chef school.

I'm up to 22,814 drink with 23,604 other and having the same sprawl issues.  I've start digging out 30x30 stockpiles just for food.  At least it sells well, although that is more just to get rid of it than to get absolutely required things.

My megaproject is to flatten the area and then build a tower of water to the highest Z-level, with four spouts at the top to cover the entire area in mud.  There's a brook running through at a lower Z-level than my fort so I'll probably have to make a skybridge across to the other side to flood it too.

All this talk of overflowing food supplies makes me wonder...

What about trading with each other over the net? Could be a cool addition to the game!

Probably would just lead to heaps of problems though..........

Sell all your food to traders or dump it for a challenge.

Gamebreaking much?  That'd make it way too easy to get adamantine, steel, and sand.
