Cheats for Newbies
« on: November 02, 2008, 08:04:44 am »

Here's an idea, but I don't really know whether or not to call it a cheat.  You embark with a load of supplies, including non-parishable food and, of course, your anvil.  You immediately abandon your fortress, then reclaim it, this time bringing only food and such and such, leaving you tons of extra points to buy said food for that difficult first year.  Since this seems to be a major turn-off (the fact that it can take several forts before you really get the hang of it), you can see this as either a cheat OR has a sort of beginners method.

No, I was unaware.  Does it only happen if you immediately abandon?

the 30-ish military dwarves in steel plate that come along on reclaim?

Yeah, if that's the problem, then it's almost the point.  =->  Sans the cost of a forge anyone should be able to survive their first winter.  But area there any other basic ideas that can give a newbie a solid chance at survival?

Build farms and stills.  I lost three forts before I found out the importance of these two things.

Um.

Farm + Plump Helmets + dwarf with at least a few points in farming = More food than you'll ever need

I think the only time I ever hit starvation was when I tried "turning on every job for every dwarf".  Combination of nobody farming and the planters having no skill meaning a lot of crops that didn't get started.

Honestly, I would imagine that having to kill the monsters upon reclamation would be much harder than farming.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

hardest would be an area without liquid water or without soil, making one dependent on trade for drink/brewable food.
-Hope you find some magma and ores under all that ice-
...
hmm.
Can you sculpt items from mined ice?

't would be hillarious to sell ice statues etc to merchants and when in adventure mode see the puddles in warmer cities, where the statues were placed. ;)

Anvil is overrated :P You can easily trade for one. Take supplies instead.
Also seeds (can gather some as well), a few War Dogs for safety.
Go underground fast, with a sinlge easy to defend (stone traps) entrance.
Focus on setting up lodgins, a big, nice dining hall and a food / booze operation first.

I...don't get it.
On another note: yeah, Wardogs are a big help too.  I'd say, if you don't understand booze production yet, bring tons, cause that slow-down factor used to drive me nuts and the caravans just don't cut it.

Seems that if you really wanted to cheat, you could just use one of the memory editing methods to give yourself 10000000 points to spend on stuff to bring.

Ya can't really have cheats when there's no way to win the game. But to prevent you from losing--how about sealing off the fortress completely from the outside world? Then have everyone farm. Can't possibly lose.

SPOILER ALERT
Build a Trade Depot anywhere on the map.  now hold Shift+D (Depot access display) while viewing a Z-level that has been completely untouched by miners.  All 'normal' stone areas will have big red D's all over them.  Any area with *any* sort of site feature will be blank (no D's).

Animal farms, agriculture, indoor fishing... Yep, he's right, sealing off is the ultimate savior.

Which is why dwarves>everything else. They are the only race not reliant on the sun.
