Circular tower
« on: November 01, 2008, 10:57:20 pm »

I want to build one.  A large one.  But, my god, designating the constructions is horrifying.

I want to believe that someone has some AutoHotKey script, or some other mechanism for doing this easily.  Please tell me this is true!

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

I dont know if you know but you can increase the size of say a wall to speed up building designations. You will find under "b" (Build) "C" (constructions) selecting the wall you can then increase the north south width with 'u' and the east west width with 'h'.

Sorry if you already know and want to go even faster.

...And then you can assign all needed stones at once by pressing Shift+Enter to that construction.

This is not going to help a lot with a circular construction however... The walls ain't straight.

You could try designating a big block of wall\floor and then canceling what you don't need. Will definitely speed up the flooring.

Also pre-planning the design in advance on paper or spreadsheet is a great timesaver.
(ms-paint or equaly primitive pixel drawer is also neat for drawing pixelated circles)

...don't forget to create a (one type) rock stockpile nearby if you are constructing.

...have you considdered sculpting your tower from the living mountain?
sure, it requires the removal of the tophalf of a mountian, but then : you can engrave the walls! :D

Eh? And 5x5 circular towers are godly when it comes to marksmen.

I'm building a circular tower with 40 square diameter! I'm already on 5th floor.  Believe me it takes a lot longer for the dwarfs to haul the stone then it takes to designate.  The biggest challenge is that you can only designate floor if its touching something (like stairs or wall below). so you have to do 2 rounds of designating for each floor. I just been designating and canceling what i don't need.  It takes 10 minutes to designate each floor and 2 seasons for my slave force to construct it.  I have 60 dwarves working on it at any given time.

Anyway, have you got a stockpile near your construction? That can help alot. Also, any 3Dwarf pics?

I dont have any pics yet, it doesn't look that impressive yet.  I'm waiting untill its at least 10 levels tall.  and btw... it looks alot like a volcano, i used kaolinite(dark red) as floor and flint as wall. Im running out of red stone though >:(

I find it much easier to have a big stockpile of ONLY the rock you need near the construction, either a regular stockpile or a quantum one.

Designate a huge square and then cancel.
If you want to build your circle on the fly, without preplanning, all you need is a calculator.
You have to go over R rows where R is the radius, starting, for example, with the rightmost point in the circle, located in the middle row (depending on whether or not your radius is even, you could have two middle rows) For the next R rows, calculate x^2+y^2, where x and y are your coordinates relative to the center of the circle, and keep going left as long as the result is larger than R^2. When it gets smaller, go one square to the right, mark it and go to the next row.
You'll end up with an approximation of a quarter circle, which you can easily copy to the remaining three sides to end up with a complete circle.
This method can be adapted to any mathematical expression, enabling sine shaped living quarters, bell-curved throne rooms, rounded hyperbolic corners, elliptic arenas and trap corridors approximating a logarithmic spiral.
