Ram Nilun, the Prison of Wearing. This is a forgotten beast leather backpack, encrusted with sunstone, studded with electrum, adorned with hanging rings of marble and menacing with spikes of crystal opal and tiger shark leather.

There's a founding image in black bronze, an electrum image of a now deceased goblin pissing off the dwarves, another electrum image of an early coronation, and a sunstone image of another dead goblin.

Currently holding exceptional sailfin molly roasts, the count's favorite food. Worth 120k, contents not included.

186th Pillaging of Apeswitch: HOLY FREAKING SHIT 186th pillaging?!?!

I think I also have an artifact of Apeswitch getting destroyed.  I think that one is actually at an earlier date.  My civilization seems to have been, overall, very successful in conquering the world.

Only vaguely. Made of the same substance and put to the same use, but a bit like comparing a castle and a doublewide trailer.

Native Aluminum Bed.  My Queen slept in a bedroom that was fit only for a dwarf of her station.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Just now, one of my dwarves created an artifact magnetite quern. What makes it so awesome?

Nomothud "The Godly Morality"

This is a Magnetite quern. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is decorated with elk bird leather and oak and encircled with bands of fire agate. This object is adorned with hanging rings of pig tail fiber and menaces with spikes of magnetite and giant cave spider silk. On the item is an image of Tosid, the deity of fortresses, depicted as a female dwarf and three dwarves in fire agate. Tosid is striking a triumphant pose. Tosid is surrounded by the three dwarves.

I'm think of building a dwarven church just to house this thing.

My fortress in a nutshell: Artifacts, buckets, forgotten beasts, and raw adamantine. God I love it when artifacts reference other artifacts. It's worth about 400K

Polishpoet The Cavernous Silver. Tanzanite Bed ( HELL YEAH )

Encrusted with tanzanite encircled with bands of siltstone and moar tanzanite.

Menaces with spikes of, you guessed it, tanzanite, giant cave spider silk and siltstone.

On the image is an image of Ingtak The Persuasive Competition, the deity of nature, the sun, fire, volcanos, earth, death, war and fortresses, depicted as a rotting male hoary marmot in steel. Ingtak the Persuasive Competition is weeping.

I love. Gem furniture.

stack of 10 prepared dragonfly brains - I'm trying to imagine what's more funny: a dwarf popping a tiny dragonfly brain into his mouth for a snack, the butcher who actually prepared this feast, or the brave hunter who ventured out into the wilderness and returned with this bounty.

My best artifact would have to be "Armorrags", a Steel Greaves

This is a steel greaves. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encrusted with turquoise and encircled with bands of steel. This object menaces with spikes of star ruby (!), moss agate and fungiwood. On the item is an image of Armorrags the steel greaves in horse bone.

So, not only is it recursive, it is also my most valuable artifact ever, at 198000 dorfbux. Add to that, that half the following artifacts have a picture of armorrags on, and you have a pretty nice artifact.

As good a first post as any, I just had my fortress construct its second artifact in its so far short and uneventful history. The first was not long after embark:
Thol Azkob "The Deep of Incense", a obsidian throne.
This is a obsidian throne. All craftdwarfship is of the highest quality.
On the item is an image of dwarves in obsidian. The dwarves are travelling. The artwork relates to the foundation of HelmedBasements(our newest hole in the dirt) by the Circular Labor of the Equivalent Handle in the early spring of 128.
On the item is an image of the Deep of Incense the obsidian throne in obsidian. (And on the image of the Deep on incense the obsidian throne in obsidian  is an image of the Deep of Incense the obsidian throne in obsidian, and so on)
On the item is an image of maples in obsidian. On the item is an image of mountains in one-hump camel bone.

And the second artifact (our blacksmith gets possessed and dodges all other materials in lieu of:
Anirbalad "Sisterscoil", a adamantine door
This is a adamantie door.  All craftdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encrusted with star ruby and encircled with bands of obsidian. On the item is an image of Dishmab Bookgleam the dwarf and The Deep of Incense the obsidian throne in adamantine. Dishmab Bookgleam is raising The Deep of Incense. The artwork relates to the creation of The Deep of Incense in HelmedBasements by the dwarf Dishmab Bookgleam in the early summer of 129. On the item is an image of dwarves in star ruby. The dwarves are laboring. The artwork relates to the foundation of Helmedbasements by the Circular Labor of the Equivalent Handle in the early spring of 128.

You mean the ability to have endless training dummies, a carpet of eyestalks and tendrills, and a plant that both makes for some good grizzled sea man hard liquor AND the ability to turn your dwarves into the Night´s Watch...not reward enough?

Pity the dwarf who has to end up using that crutch :3

Edit: oh yeah, it was a possession. those don't even get you a legendary out of it... oh well /shrug

honestly, that was a ragequit moment.  The friggin thief just walked on past and grabbed it.  There were like 100+ floors yet to be placed.
My computer struggled to load all the demons.  Then, next frame, I check the unit list....
The last.... 4+ pages.... all demons.

Nah. The spikes are on the bottom and lower sides. They're for stabbing at younger dwarves that don't get out of the way.

Like The Twits, by Roald Dahl.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

A bloodstone throne. I'm going to build a shrine to Armok just for this, and the throne will be the centerpiece.

"Nutsprayed", leather trousers. I really don't want to know. Also, some adamantine armor worth about a million.
