I have a military dwarf whose spine was broken on his first day of training. I made him a member of the fortress guard to shore up the numbers and make him happy. Recently he dragged himself out of his bed, claimed a leatherworker's shop, and spent a year crawling around the fortress claiming the parts he needed: three pieces of donkey leather.

He constructed Zalud Otad, a donkey leather high boot menacing with spikes of donkey leather and bearing images of demons. Its worth 5400, easily the least valuable artifact I've ever had. Even though it's useless, I've got to admire his determination. Even a broken lower spine didn't stop him.

Can't really remember what it was called but, dang it, it was awesome! It was a golden warhammer, with hanging rings of copper and menacing with spikes of aluminium and gold. First artifact of the fort. And now the legendary weaponsmith shall work for all eternity.

.... I caught a snatcher with a child once that way.  Bloody odd having a cage with a thing holding a small cage inside, with a child inside that.
Yo, we heard you liked captives.  So we put a cage in your cage, so you can capture while you're capturing!

I made a very nice artefact with the new 31.01 version:

"Fragrantnoses the Glum Night", a granite mechanism:
56,984,440 dwarfbucks (That’s 56 Million) and lot’s of Artwork.  :-)

It kind of started, when I noticed, that I had no strange mood for some times. When I look  closer I noticed, that furnace operator that started a strange mood long time ago, was still busy. The furnace operator was assigned to the metal burrow, down at the Magma smelters, but he picked a mechanics workshop in the main fortress. He only picked stones from the burrow he was assigned to, but never started with actually making his artefact.
At that point I decided to encourage that kind of behaviour, by putting some gold/siver/raw adamantine stockpiles at the place he was collecting his stones.  :-))
He continued to collect for about two years or so and finaly I decided to set him free, by letting him out of his burrow.
He started to collect the rest of the stuff he needed and then produced this realy nice artefact:
"Fragrantnoses the Glum Night", a granite mechanism.

I suspect it is not really just a mechanism, but a mechanical computer capable of running Dwaf Fortress. ;)

Here is the screen of the artefact

And some of the Artwork (page 1 of 6)

Planepacked all over again. Fix is simple: dwarf in mood should ignore burrows. Did you report it in bug tracker?

"Conventkingdoms the Wave of Attacking"
This is an Emerald window. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. This object menaces with spikes of Emerald and Pinfire opal. On the item is an image of dwarves in Chestnut. The dwarves are traveling.

Value: 193200*

At the time I got it it was worth twice as much as the rest of my fortress combined.

Sherikizeg, "The Perplexing Ape", an iron figurine Dostngosp Doomflag.
"This is a iron figurine of Dostngosp Doomflag.  All craftdwarfship is of the highest quality.
The item is a masterfully designed image of Dostngosp Doomflag the goblin in iron by Etur Bemalorul.  Dostgnosp Doomflag is making a plaintive gesture.  The artwork relates to the mortal wounding of the goblin Dostngosp Doomflag with a large, serrated iron disc during The Seventh Attempted Abduction at Clashworks.
It is encrusted with moonstone and encircled with bands of goblin bone."

I love everything about this.

Interestingly, it made him a legendary Bone Carver.  Also, I didn't see him pick up any iron before making it (though I may have overlooked it, since the workshop was cluttered).  I think this has happened to me before, so I assume it's a bug (and that I'm not the first to notice.)

Except that this one is an auto-plane-packed. No manually futzing with things.

Toady typically doesn't do things by half measures.  As evidenced by turning "make hauling work better" into "implement mine carts with physics".
There are many issues with this statement.
