I remember on my last fort, right before the world went to hell, one of my blacksmiths took over a forge and then later came out with an Iron Shortsword named 'AngelSlaughter the barren epitome.' It had rings and spikes of obsidian and had various engravings of an elf going beserk and killing a bunch of dwarves, and some engravings of elves getting hacked to pieces. Then I accidentally opened a magma pool and lit everything on fire, and this was after the tantrum spiral just started.

"Accidentally" or accidentally?

Yes but then the three children hanging off her will catch fire.
And that's stopped people before...?

I wish that all my artifacts could be like this statue. Really, it sometimes saddens me to know that stuff that I manipulate will probably turn out better than most of my artifacts.

^ Yeah, I mean, what the hell? Adamantine barrel?! Forge something better! Like a door at the very least!

Still, it's got to be the most badass barrel ever, since it also menaces with adamantine spikes, bands of the stuff, encrusted with red diamond and decorated with an image of itself in ash.

Because dwarves are goddamned crazy.
So, basically, it is just a matter of luck whether you live or suffer horrible death... sounds like dwarf fortress.

My weaver, Cerol Nitigrith, had a mood fairly early in the fort. I was super excited, but that excitement was crushed once I found out it was a Possessed mood. I eventually got around to making a Clothier's workshop, and Cerol immediately claimed it. Here is what the guy made:

And now, my Upcoming/In training weaver has been possessed also  :-\ wonder what he'll make.

In a fort that was pretty dedicated to glass, A glass maker made a Green Glass Idol worth 80,000 DB. Great, though about a year later another glassmaker got possessed and made another glass idol worth 8,000 with a picture of the first one on it. He got to fight the Xelics (un-stobbable!) alone.

I also have an awesome steel gauntlet, with bands of native platinum and limestone, encrusted with native platinum and schist, and with spikes of native platinum and giant cave spider chitin. On it there's an image of a sweet pod in steel, and an image of a pine in native platinum. The leader of my military is wearing it, and it's covered in goblin blood.

New personal best: Autumnpools the Funeral of Artifices, a GCS silk thong.
Value: 114,400 dwarfbucks.
It's undyed, apparently, and encrusted with alunite and decorated with more GCS silk. Ribbons, I imagine. The weird part is the image of his friend Melbil the farmer and two flies. An artistic impression of it is soon to come; just thought I'd share.

It's debatable if it's the 'best', but it fits well in this fort, which has an indigo tourmaline grate ("The Moist Craft"), and a turtle shell crown ("The Brain of Dreams") as the other artifacts so far.

Dasel Kulin, "The Heaven of Palms", a muskox leather sandal

This is a muskox leather sandal. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is decorated with rhesus macaque leather and encircled with bands of muskox leather and Blue diamond. This object menaces with spikes of longnose gar leather.

My current fort's been going quite a while now, and has managed to produce artifact beds for both the king and hir consort, if they ever decide to show up. The most pricey is the Venoms of Kindling, a native gold bracelet worth 156,000. Next best is "Shovegifts", a 107,400 turtle-shell helm which commemorates the construction of a fine cow-skull totem.

I have had a good collection of 200k+ dwarfbuck artifacts in my time, but this one if one of the most unique I have seen. My dedicated bonecarver had been pumping out gobs of bone bolts when he got a wild idea. He took Catfish Bone Bolts [5], Catfish Bone, Turtle Bone, Crappie Bone and Spider Silk to make a short sword. Did he wrap the spidersilk around 5 bone bolts and use the other bone to make some sort of teeth for the sword? I get a mental image of something like the Hawaiian Leiomano

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leiomano

Its a really cheap artifact (7,200), but its kinda neat that its a bone sword made from bone bolts. I think that makes it awesome.

He took Catfish Bone Bolts [5]
Impossible (unless you modded that to happen, or cheated). Much more likely is that it was sitting in the workshop, but he wasn't actually doing anything with it.
