2. This artifact has a single image of itself on it, in the correct material. This is the artifact I've produced which has such an image.

The point is, even one self-image engraved results in an endless loop. Since it's got an image of itself on it, an image of it has the image of itself in the image.

And it means the maker had to know exactly what it would look like when it was completed.

.... I caught a snatcher with a child once that way.  Bloody odd having a cage with a thing holding a small cage inside, with a child inside that.
Yo, we heard you liked captives.  So we put a cage in your cage, so you can capture while you're capturing!

"But it was 24,000 dwarf bucks! I thought it HAD to be good quality with that kind of price!"

Litez Itat, "The Sorcerers of Chill", a Marble Harp. Sounds like Urist McBeatnik wanted to make some groovy tunes. "Chillax, you hip and groovy cats and kittens. I'm going to lay you out some smooth beats and cool melodies."

"Chillax, you hip and groovy cats and kittens. I'm going to MAKE YOU INTO BISCUITS AND SOCKS!"

For some reason, the hippie movement never really took hold in dwarf society.

The raccoon's still there, though.  Just chilling out.  Being a raccoon in some rocks.

Quick question:

Is there a way to view your previous fort(s) artifacts in legends or something?

I recently abandoned my first fort, and had the urge to look over the artifacts again, but unfortunately when I abandoned I backed up the wrong save so I can't go back.

If not, no big deal, it was my first fort and nothing special, though I'd like to remind myself what "tempdedgrowls, the jet puzzlebox" that my new fort keeps engraving on the walls actually was. :P

You can view all previous artifacts in legends mode.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Ok I found where you can view some basic detail in legends mode, but am I right in assuming there's no way to get the full detail again without finding the item in adventurer mode or something? (The legends mode description tells me what it is, but not what images are on it or what materials it's made of).

Move the selection over the artifact and hit enter.

Yes, I realize that much. But when I select the artifact in legends mode, it shows something like:

Twoblizzards the Illnesses of Righteousness was a legendary Fire agate cage.

In the late spring of 202, Twoblizzards the Illnesses of Righteousness was created in Lashedgrowls by the dwarf Kumil Peacefulgilt.

Whereas we are all familiar with the full description you get in Fortress mode.

I guess I'll have to do a reclaim on my first fort to see the full descriptions or something.

There is actually one possible exception to this. Hypothetically, if you got an artifact engraving (I know this isn't possible) which depicted itself then it could in fact contain any arbitrary imagery while still maintaining self reference without becoming fractal. However, for all practical purposes, yes, any decoration which depicts the decorated object is fractal, though the more self-referential decorations there are, the more interesting the fractal is.

Wait... I have an idea...
