If playing on an arctic map, you can build a meaner projectile trap by merit of using water and bridges to form ice cubes. Have fun.
I believe the ice cannon is a better alternative.

We already have the degrinchinator for that. But crushing invaders with huge obsidian shards is infinitely more dwarven then simply freezing them.

Has anyone had any success solidifying magma mid-air by spraying it with water?

Has anyone considered using a Support from the top of the obsidian chamber?

Link the support and the bridges to the same lever.  When the bridge retracts, the support blows, and the Obsidian falls, witout taking out the bridge, thus meaning all you need to do is build another set up stairs up, put in a new support, get rid of you stairs, and bam, new Obsidian deathchamber.
That's awfully complicated compared to putting up a new bridge.

Isn't that kinda the point?  *Laughs*  We're tryuing to drop a slab of Obsidian on everything in an entrance hallway just to see if it'll work!

EDIT: And plus, I mean, jeez, pretty bridges!

The principle is fundamentally sound. (like the principles of the economy!)

In fact, I once had a "natural" midair obsidian block form, and fall through several layers of magma. Confused me until I figured out what happened.

I channeled a path from a pond to a vent, so when the water touch the top of the vent it solidified the magma. However, a 7/7 tile spread diagonally first, which doesn't provide support IIRC. and so it fell.

The way I see it, simple operation doesn't detract from a Rube Goldberg machine. The extra dwarven intervention needed to recharge the machine is what detracts from it.

I've been toying with this idea, and I'd like to see if anyone had already tested whether or not it works-
The core of the trap is a 2-tall chamber bordered by bridges on all sides. When the proper lever is pulled, all the bridges forming the walls open outward and the bridge forming the floor retracts. This chamber is flooded with water and lava to create a solid projectile, and that projectile is dropped on a solid, stable (no digging anywhere below it) chamber where your enemies are located.
The result should be a cave-in which should obliterate anyone below it and knock out anyone near.

I only read the first page but i made this trap ages ago.

Its called the stone fall trap :P
