Importing Bauxite
« on: October 31, 2008, 10:58:28 am »

Can you import bauxite? I'm currently working on a megaproject that will involve a huge tower with lavafalls which I plan on using to flood the entire map with.  The problem is, I don't have bauxite on my map, and I don't see any way to request it in the trade liason screen. Is there a way to get any?

If it's not on the liaison's list then your civ has no access to bauxite. If there's none anywhere in the location you're at (unlikely as you're in a location with magma, though it is possible if you have any sedimentary layers somewhere on the map) then that means you're out of luck.

I've never seen anything about this on the Wiki or on the forums, but when selecting your starting civilization, it's important to choose a mountainhome located in an area with sedimentary stone, if you want to be able to trade for bauxite.

If they don't offer it the first time they ask you what you want, it's likely that you will never be able to trade for bauxite.  Sorry.

Dig through any sedimentary layers you have. It comes in large clusters so if there is any it should be easy to find and cover all your needs.
You don't need that many of it - just the Mechanisms on Magma-Floodgates. Everything else can be made of steel.
If you don't find any, you will have to make it without any safety-floodgates :o

Therein lies another one of my problems on this map... I can't find any metal, let alone iron.  I found a cluster of copper and a cluster of platium and that's it so far.  I've been practically strip mining the map and I can't find anything.

I might have to scrap this world and try to get a better mountainhome/embart site.

Darnit though, I thought this site was perfect... I have a volcano, and river, flux, and no aquifer. :(

What kind of flux, and how deep were you digging?

Platinum metal is magma-safe (but native platinum "stone" is not, so no mechanisms) - also, a surprising amount of equipment for working with magma doesn't actually have to be magma-safe - you can use pumps made entirely of wood, for instance.

Lack of ores doesn't matter, goblins will be your primary ore anyway

You can always make a system with no floodgates in it and pumps made of steel. Or alternatively, have a lever that dumps a bunch of water on the flow if something goes wrong

Marble, and I dug down about 13 zlevels

I actually have a couple all-wood pumps up at the moment, that isn't the problem.  I need a shitton of bauxite mechanisms to complete the design I have lain out. I plan on having the map completely flooded save for a couple spots for caravans/sieges to enter and a bunch of alternating magma fountains.

Looks like you are in need of some +creative pump work+

It takes up much more room than floodgates, but unless you need some high pressure stuff, it shouldn't be too hard to get it working once you have enough water turbines, and might actually be faster responding to levers.

Yeah, if my embark profile tells me that I can't get any bauxite, I plan on pumps for all my magma moving needs.  Actually thinking I might be able to flood the world on this map with just pumps if I get spirits of fire in my HFS.

Yeah, I scrapped my old world, this new one has everything I need and more :D I have a chasm to work with now, though I'm not sure how I'll incorperate that into my project.

but unless you need some high pressure stuff

I do, I want to make lava geysers that alternate or fire off in a line or something. I'm not sure about how I want to organize them yet.

There is a pump layout that does not require anything to be made of bauxite at all.  It's on the wiki, just search "pump."  I use it all the time, as I am addicted to magma traps.  EVERY fort I make must have one.  I've designed a nigh-invulnerable auto-defense magma trap, the only flaw is that it cannot protect against Bronze Colossi and HFS.  But I've thought of a way to get around HFS as well.

Ah, for lava geysers I would use a pump battery (lots of pumps in a row, like 10 or so for each one) above the max level of the geysers, forcing the 70 or so units into a small passageway and out a pool all at once.  then you can just have a gear assembly with a lever P/r to pulse it, or whatever water pressure/floodgate setup you need.

That's more or less what I had planned.  I was thinking about a series of chambers in a row, each which two openings and a pressure plate inside. One opening (on the bottom) will lead to the pumping station, and the opening on the top will be closed with a hatch. When a chamber releases all of its magma, the pressure plate will activate and open the hatch on the next chamber.  If I work it out right, I can get it to fire off in a steady, continuous cycle.

Something we need to test.
Since you can make Trap Components out of metal (Steel included to my knowledge)
Mechanisms are the very last on that list.
Are steel mechanisms as magma safe as bauxite ones?
