I just need to know: Is it possible for a dwarf, once dead and entombed, to come back to life under any circumstances?

Dwarf Companion can bring them back, but their corpse will still be in their grave.

Creepy, ;D.

Soon . . . soon . . .

And then I shall attack the Elves with their own skeletal war giant leopards (except that they were alive when I got them).

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

This needs to happen for Sinister biomes. Have anything that turns rotten rise back up as a zombie.

Not vermin, please. >.>

I'm not sure the world is ready for thousands of undead lizards. I know my CPU isn't.

But they'd make such cute pets!

Didn't it happen under certain circumstances in very old versions?

While the concept would be rather...difficult to play with in a Terrifying Biome, undead Dwarves attacking would be a fun threat SOMEHOW.

The question is: how?

Should it be a natural occurrence?  Happen to dwarves that rot? (not always avoidable.... but would give good excuse to have a functioning tomb), how about a Necromancer "mega-beast" (He could be a Lich, and relatively immune to all piercing attacks/ bolts), and if you abandon the fort/ lose, in Adventure mode, or reclamation, all the Dwarves that died/ were dead in tombs are undead?

For safeties sake though, the only sane answer is to dump all corpses into the magma.  From the mountain we have risen, from the mountain we shall return.

Personally I'd like to see dead dwarves rise once you breached the HFS.  Otherwise it should only happen as a rare occasion on a Terrifying map, or if one of the aforementioned undead megabeasts appeared.

Also, not every dead dwarf should rise.  I think that proper burial in an adequate tomb should prevent dwarves from rising, whether because their spirit's satisfied with how their body was treated, or because in addition to an exceptional coffin and an engraved tomb, you also included a masterpiece door which is barred shut from the outside.

It would also be a nasty surprise if the creature that arose from the grave depended on how the dwarf died in the first place, or what was done with its body.  A dwarf that died by falling into lava, or whose body was immolated, ought to produce a less powerful Flame Spirit, while a drowned dwarf should create some kind of ooze-related creature, in addition to the standard zombies that come shuffling out of mass graves.

Ah, but then goblins never get a proper burial in a dwarf fortress, so a moat filled with zombie goblins could become a standard defense.

This is one of those multiple choice questions where "D. All of the above" is the correct answer. A few more RAW tokens could make this an epic gameplay feature. This needs to be crosschecked with the suggestions sub-forum and Toady's bloat list. If it ins't there it needs to be posted there.

(Zombie Dwarf zoo with glass windows anyone? Mmm, zombie death traps and.. Woah, if Toady added Zombification as a spreadable disease, it would be epic.)

A world-gen zombie apocalypse?
Sounds fun.
Also, is it just me, or is preparing for the inevitable undead onslaught a uniquely male habit?

Just means that after the zombie apocalypse, what few women remain will rise to the top of the social structure. But yes, as far as I've seen it is a male only trait. Doesn't mean a zombie Ripley isn't out there, though.
