My best guess: It is a bug involving a tile from world creation that got stuck while deciding what to be.

Save it and send the save to Toady for bug report, but after that... MINE THAT SUCKER

Nah..  It was edited with Tile Edit without my knowledge, I found out AFTER I posted about it, of course...  (Damn family members who think MY computer's contents are theirs...)
I mined it and got an obsidian stone.
Damn.
I wanted one of the gems.

down is rather inapropriate ADHD or MPD is much more suitable.
Never seen a nicer example of a +bug+ though...even if it was effectively selfinflicted. :)

How exactly did you get that though?  Could be a cool effect to reproduce on purpose in some spots (but it would be awful if large blocks, :D).

I would have made a temple around it, with statues, pools of water and magma, and a sacrifical pit for the Pillar of Armok.

If you smooth it, does it still do that?
