Awesome story! I think the easiest way to remedy this is slate all of your traps for removal, then turn off the mechanic labor for your dwarves. Or, you can suspend the "construction" of all the traps slated for removal.

thanks for the tip, i'll try that if the opportunity comes up again.

great Great GREAT news! after playing some more, i set one particular peasant's job preference to 'health care' and nothing else. He carried the mother to a nearby empty bed, and the child wandered into my fort and chilled out in the dining room. Kib Asmellacad, the peasant with health care, continued to provide food and water to both the mother and her child. Winter hit, and when i checked to see Nish Ilidonul (the Mom), i found that her leg injury had healed from broken (yellow) to moderate (darker shade of yellow)! within the next couple dwarf days, she recovered completely, got up, and claimed her baby boy!

this is a joyous occasion, and so i will dub those involved with special titles:

for Tirist Mebanedem, the baby boy, i dub thee "Ultimate Survivor" for being such a tough ass baby. Lets hope that arm of yours gets better eventually.

for Nish Ilidonul, The Mother, I dub thee "Greatest Mom" for fighting tooth and nail to protect your child

and for Kib Asmellacad, the one that gave them both food and water and kept them alive during recuperation, I dub thee "Saint", for doing what no one else is this godforsaken hole in the ground would do, show compassion.

On top of that, i declare the 3rd of moonstone to be a fortwide holiday in celebration of this great survival story! hurray!

You do realize the peasant only did it because you specifically ordered him to, and because he had nothing better to do... not because he's particularly saintly... right?  ;D

Next time try {forbid}ding the traps. Might work

Although you probably still would have to cancel the pending jobs as the dwarveswho already had trap jobs queed,  still might fill that they need to walk up to the trap to check whether it is actually forbidden.

You should mandate the construction of a mug for her.

Forbidding traps is awesome, I have discovered. Just hit d -> b -> f and designate over them. When they jam, the trap cleaning job appears in the job list, but is never activated because the traps components are forbidden. Then you can use [t] to find which trap specificly is jammed, because the trap component list will include someones body. If you also have forbid on death on for enemies, you can then unforbid the trap parts to enable the cleaning job, but leave the body forbidden to prevent it making a hauling job when it drops out of the trap, which can be useful if you want to risk just one dwarf rushing out and cleaning a trap between ambush waves.

Just hit [d] -> -> [d] and designate over them.

That would be (d) -> (b) -> (d), of course [I thought it was d/b/(f)orbid, though - I've never used it myself and I can't check at the moment though]

i'll try that next time, but i want to try to collect the goblin stuff when i can because it's so valuable. also, i've discovered things called "waterskins" and "backpacks" that'll let my soldiers stay on duty longer because they'll have water and food on them when they get hungry or thirsty! makes one wonder why they can't carry a "beerskin" though.

You can unforbid it when you're sure it's safe.

Yes and... yes. I got the wrong third key. Allow me to edit my post to make this post pointless.

It's worth mentioning that forbidding traps like this ONLY works if you forbid them BEFORE the "Clean Trap" job ends up in the queue.

If you've got a flood of "wannabe cleaners", forbidding after the fact won't do anything.

Some jobs can be canceled from the "j"obs screen. They'll requeue if the thing to be done still exists, but it may be a good way to snap them out of trying to clean a now-forbidden trap.
