Gabriel Knight 2 isn't obscure? But I thought no one played that game? I certainly never met anyone who knew what it was (To admit the only part that justifies this... would be its endgame puzzle... That thing is just malicious)

I know it as one of the best adventure games ever. Or so I heard.

Anyone heard of "Another World/Out of this World"?

Yes, not obscure at all.

Yes. Still have a copy on CD. Was never able to get past the room where you drop down through the ceilling into a laser fight. But probably a lot of people have played it. It was ported to several consoles.

Another World and the sequel(s)/prequel(s) (I never managed to remember them all properly) were in fact pretty big.

IIRC they traded graphics detail for animation quality (which probably was necessary back then) which led to a completely newish feel and look for jump and runs back then. The fluid movements of the protagonist had our jaws dropping, i still remember that.

Mordor II was pretty sweet,

Starship Troopers: Terran Ascendancy as far as I can tell from internet searches is one friggin obscure game that I poured hours into and loved.
A quick web search only showed up results for the FPS released later but the first game was released in 2001 (I think) and was a realtime tactical game with your squad of 12-21 troopers and specialists running through missions earning experience to get promotions where you kitted out each trooper with weapons armour and accessories (like binoculars) before each mission and if troopers went down you could medevac them to save their lives but medevacs were limited and so on. Such a sweet game.

But hands down winner of most obscure game I can remember playing was one for Apple IIe that I can't remember the name of where you were an Australian explorer in the early 1800's trying to cross the Blue Mountains. You had to buy provisions like food, axes, rope, horses and then use text commands to determine your route and there were set obstacles for each route as well as random encouters with things like cliffs, rivers, gorges and such.

Other contenders were Journeyman Project, Hugo's Adventure, S.P.Q.R., Uni rally and Liquid wars.

You know Microman had a sequel.

I think I played the first one.

I dunno if it was the sequel or not, I had absolutely zero manual dexterity as a kid and never could beat that giant death tank guy.

How about 'The War in Heaven'?

Never played it, but I saw it at a Big Lots once.

I have also played that Legacy of Siboot game put up early in the thread.

Another World(Out of this World) was awesome
Heart of the Alien(Sequel that Chahi had nothing to do with) was less so.

I can still beat Out of this World in less than 15 minutes without dying once(Though if I do screw up its usually on that fricken falling boulders part)

As for other obscure games

Siege of Avalon (Not terribly rare, but I pretty much never see it mentioned so I kind of wonder)

Oh, the TI-99 had some great ones.

Tunnels of Doom - (1982) Each basement was randomly generated(Up to 10 floors)
Super Demon Attack! - Hehehe
I'd list Sewermania but I can't find much on it anywhere(And I never knew what to do in the game) but the "Find the bomb, Dave." line still sticks in my memory.

There comes a time when you must take off the soft, furry slippers of a boy and put on the shoes of a man.
Unless of course they don't fit properly and your feet blister up like bubble wrap.
Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.
Especially if that fat pig Tony is at the desk.

I don't know if it's been mentioned and am not reading 8 pages of forum posts to find out, but... The closest thing to an obscure game I've played besides DF is The Neverhood.

I consider it obscure because it sold less than 50,000 copies, and because it was an adventure game released when adventure games were in the middle of dying their slow, undignified death. But it's a gem for the genre.

The soundtrack composed by Terry S. Taylor might be the most delightfully weird one in all computer gaming. Search for "Everybody Way Oh" in YouTube, and then tell me you didn't giggle at the song.

EDIT: I don't know a lot of people that have played Mario Paint either. But there were a few years when that was about half of all I ever played on my Super NES.

Neverhood is hardly obscure, I mean it is a relatively recent PC-CD game and because of that pretty easy to get a copy (rerelease, image, whatever) of. It's still quite a nice and original game though.

The most obscure? Dunno, really ... I suppose berusky, a czech puzzle (sokoban) game with ladybugs, but really, there are loads and loads of mostly unknown games out there.

the original author recently re-released Out of This world, with re-masterd hand painted backgrounds.  its well worth the couple of bucks to get to play through it again, with beautifule art.

The number of copies or if it appeared in a store doesn't in my mind make something obscure.

Afterall if no one bought a game and no one remembers it. Why isn't it obscure?

Mind you in terms of degrees it probably isn't as obscure as a game that had very few copies and sold even fewer.

Here is a game that is obscure: The first Neverwinter Nights
