There was a card game called Nuclear War.

That was great fun. It inspired such lines as 'Do you have change for thirty million citizens?'

That's not very obscure.  I played an online version of it on Brett Spiel Welt (german online board game site) a long time ago.  For whatever reason I don't see it on there now though.

Has anyone ever played a little Klik & Play game called Flags of Doom?

After some time of nosing around all my old CDs, I found that little game and had some fun playing a few levels.

It's pretty simple at first, and then just after the first 20 levels, it becomes demonically hard.

Still, fun little game. I'll put up a screenshot soon.

Gazillionaire, if I or someone else hasn't already mentioned it.

It's like a souped-up excel spreadsheet with kid-friendly drawings of zaaaannnyyy aliens, in which you try to make 1 million "kubars" before the other AI personalities.

Reminds me of Space Bucks where you had to manage an intergalactic trading empire (shipping routes and such) and that I was terrible at it as a kid.  As an adult (and running a Win98 VM through WinXP so I could play a Win95 game) I managed to overflow some variable, and as such I consider myself to have "won" the game, despite not having driven teh 3 AI into bankruptcy (I was outpacing the 2nd place company by about 75%).

Star Crusader and Maelstrom (the 1990s one, not the 2000s one)

Hell yeah at Maelstrom.  Even though it seemed like it was too hard and was stacked against the player a little too much.

I found exactly one fan page for it, once.  He interviewed the creator, and it turns out the guy who wrote it never even played the finished version all the way through...so...yeah.

The Maelstrom that I'm familiar is an astroid remake by Ambrosia games. Is this the same game?

Oo, Ares was a great RTS space game.

I, at least, am thinking of the PC Maelstrom:

The Ambrosia version was for the Mac.

Star Wars: Galactic battlegrounds was the game of my late elementary school years. We had several computers and that was the only game installed on all of them. I've never heard anyone else talk about it.

For me, it's Science Horizons Survival on the ZX Spectrum. It seems I have enjoyed life sims from a very early age. :)
