I finally figured out how to forward the ports on my router, so I'm up for some BG multiplayer.

Just thought i would post to make sure this thread doesn't get lost in time again. Should we set a rough date for a trial game to see how things run?

Unless you're a sorcerer, you can't. Spells in D&D (pre 4th Edition) are a one-shot thing, once per day (that is, until you camp and rest). Regular Wizzards that want to cast a spell multiple times between rests have to "memorize" that spell multiple times (so if you have three level 1 slots, you can have 2 missiles and one sleep, or 3 x sleep, etc). Gotta love that nonsensical magic system.

Sorcerers don't memorize spells, they can cast any they know as long as they have "casts" left for that level for that day, and get more casts per day than Wizzards but can learn less spells in total and can't learn them from books scrolls, only when leveling up.

And yes I know how to spell Wizzard.

Baldur's Gate runs on 2nd Edition D&D rules, so what Sergius said is true.

I don't remember the specifics for sorcerers, but wizards in first Baldur's Gate started with 1 first level spell per day. First level caster = 1 magic missile followed by healthy 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
And no, those castings were not piling up over time for any character.

Okay, some clarifying needs to be done here.

There are no sorcerers in Baldur's Gate, you only have the mage class. You can only memorize as many spells as you have room for, you get more slots when you level up. Resting once will restore your spells.

You get more spell slots per day as you level up.

You haven't played a wizard in pen-and-paper game before? They all lack power in low levels - they have to carefully balance the use of their spells (which may also require material components or gold). After their spells are spent, they fling daggers from a distance.

The power of a high level arcane magic user is the reward of enduring the low levels.

If I recall correctly, Neverwinter Nights was also 2nd edition. A character could have from four spells per day of varying levels at first level up to 36 spells per day at 20th level.

That was also used in Temple of Elemental Evil, so maybe NwN used 3.5...

No, NWN is based on D&D version 3. You can improve your stats, and it has sorcerers and prestige classes, remember?

You can refer to the spell progression table here:
