Bloodbusting Hammer Sparring
« on: October 20, 2008, 10:25:41 pm »

So I just lost a trainee to sparring, when he bled to death.  How I'm not quite sure - he was a Skilled Wrestler, masterpiece leather armor and shield, and strangest of all, the dwarf who earned the kill is a Competent Hammerer using a basic iron hammer.  He bled to death from a hammer blow.  Any theories?

Now I gotta find another useless twerp to replace him.

Well, if you're still puzzled, then clearly there were no limbs - unless you had coffins, also, and didn't see them haul off his dismembered body.

A massive internal organ injury might've done the trick as well.

Yeah, unrecognizable mass and all that. Like stepping on grapes.

Most disgusting visual ever. Naturally, the only one fitting of Dwarf Fortress.

Actually, that's probably what's happening in Dwarven stills. Bearded dwarven women, with blood and vomit all over their clothings and body, stepping on berries, fruits and mushrooms with their naked feet to make dwarven booze...

Yaaaaaargh. *brain bleach*

This is why I'm glad DF is only an ASCII game.  Seeing it in full graphical glory would probably have an effect akin to having tea with Cthulhu.

Playing a cheesemaker in an average Fortress 'round here would be. Freaking. Terrifying.

Toady, how much of DF is inspired by Labyrinth? Is Armok actually David Bowie? Because that would simultaneously be disturbing and awesome.

The hammerdwarf was trying to dodge a blow when his hammer accidentally struck the wrestler in the groin, causing him to bleed to death.

Your killed dwarf was unlucky. The combat system is very basic right now. Some combat results are just unbeliveable... Have you ever seen a mediocre [nop, not even champion] speardwarf soloing a modded [SIZE:60] dragon without taking any injuires? Because I've seen it already.  ;)
...now about your question: Blunt weapons can cause bleeding injuries, but it's not so common. [Compared to edged weapons]

You would have to be lucky to kill an imaginary creature while overcoming many of the challenges midgets have.

Eh no doubt. Still, the randomness of the current combat system is easily noticeable. Hopefully once the planned Army Arc features will be implemented + Combat Arc will be functional also, the combat system will be much more balanced and "normalized". [Now I am using Kael's modded dragon with SIZE:200, hopefully 1 dwarf won't be able to kill that, but I haven't seen it in action yet... ;D]

Its happened in real life that a dwarf wielding a spear has killed a huge fire-breathing dragon without taking any damage? When?
