Tournament of Spears: Postponed
« on: October 19, 2008, 03:21:17 am »

While pondering to myself how best to acquire champion Speardwarves, a solution came up; put a single already-skilled fighter in one-on-one sparring with a lightly armed recruit, and have them spar until said recruit inevitably dies from an organ puncture. Sensible enough, right?

However, upon further examination - and the note that I have only two proficient speardwarves, from my embark party - I realized that acquiring more already-skilled fighters would be quite difficult, as it would involve a lot of bloodshed; throwing a whole bunch of dwarves in a room to poke each other with spears until they all got stabbed in the lungs would leave only one remaining.

And that's when it hit me.

A tournament.

In the little chunk of glacier that inhibits my merciless, freezing mountain, I will dig a "pyramid" of minimum-size sparring rooms, airlocked with food and booze drops - interlocking to form a maze not unlike a tournament roster.

A legion goes in. A champion comes out.

What say you, friends?

I had a fortress where the mayor kept mandating spears, so I armed recruits with them and set them to spar. Iron chain mail armour, as I recall. I didn't have any more training accidents than with any other weapon. I think out of seven spear-armed dwarves, 2 were at champion and 2 were at spearmaster by the time I got bored.

This, and the fact that I have very, very limited fuel, will be why the fights will be with steel spears and leather armor/shields.

And while filiming may be too lengthy and indeterminate - checking wounds every five seconds, etc - I'm not opposed to hosting a betting pool with detailed descriptions provided by yours truly for each matchup's outcome.

This sounds awesome by the way, and with steel spears you should have somedeaths fairly frequently, I had 3 fatalities and numerous wounds just by letting my axedorfs train with steel, even though they were wearing steel plate.

More probable ending :

A legion goes in. A squad of nervous system-damaged soldiers come out.  :P

no, no, these are spears. they'll puncture lungs.

add goblin spearmen and spearmasters for extra fun.

And occasionally there would be monster fights.

Player: Alright Kogan, you bested Urist, but can you beat 15 goblins? FIGHT!
 Kogan: Well crap...

He wants a survivor, not to paint the walls.

I am all for this betting pool idea. But only one battle should be done at a time, IMO. I want to know how my champion gets killed. This could be made of win if you wrote the whole tournament up in a story.

Digging out a fortress in the shape of a tournament roster sounds like a great idea. Make the z-level above the tournament rooms be the logistics of it: ever room has a hole in the roof where you can dump barrels of food and drink down to the participants. Hell, dump the participants through the holes too, and have the only exit out of the complex be in the final battle room.

edit: okay, I'm so doing this.

I have begun preparations. In a few days, the betting pool will be made visible.

Also, due to the location of the tournament area (middle of a glacier), I will be having airlock food rooms from below rather than above. The championship arena, however, will be open-air with spectator seating.

Give me a few days, and the official post with the betting pool will be up.

This sounds awesome. You should post the individual competitor's profiles. Maybe we'll see a pattern of dwarves who detest purring maggots getting killed by ones that like cows for their haunting moos, or something like that.

Bonus points: competitors that somehow survive their punctured organs are left out on the ice to die, or sealed alive in a tomb. If you have any HFS, you could use them as shock troopers.

Triple bonus points; failed competitors are placed in a prison complex complete with metal bars to keep them from leaving.
