That's the point... it's an abstraction which shouldn't be abused by extrapolation for convenience's sake. 

Although the abstraction is necessary until hauling is improved, partly for convenience's sake.

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

Or remain as the gravel it assumable is. And gravel could be used to make roads. Or make better roads from gravel covered with stone.

Meh...evil idea.

Then again, in my current game I lack stone it's almost silly :(

Building an entire village out of stone is not easy.
