Mining Option: Crush Stone While Mining
« on: October 19, 2008, 02:52:40 am »

It's simple. Low-skill miners already have a chance to not yield usable stone from mining. Shouldn't skilled miners have the ability to do so at will?

It'd solve the stone management problem once and for all; in order to balance it, make stone-smashing mining give no experience.

Anyone think this is workable, or would it be too blunt a solution?

It could be added to the dwarf's pref menu, like "m : mining behavior".

Also, in order to balance it, smashing stone should divide the mining speed by 2.

It's an absurd solution. Stone has to go somewhere.

Suggested, like, a zillion times already. We'll see.

Indeed. What we need is better hauling. If stone still gets in the way at that point, a workaround like that might be an option for some.

As I said; SKILLED miners. Mining is the only skill where higher levels of experience can be a nuisance.

While it would make mining out rooms less of a nuisance, I don't see how how this would be realistic in any way.

This suggestion seems to come up a lot...
The main problem here seems to be the fight between people who want more realism and those who want easier game play. I think ultimately it should just be left to the Toad to decide.

When you crush a stone, you only get a lot of smaller stones. If this were implemented, the problem would increase a MILLION-fold.

Realism doesn't seem to be the issue here. As it happens now, low skilled miners can sometimes make a square of rock turn into nothing. At all other times the square of rock is somehow COMPRESSED. If we want realism, we're going to need some sweet mine carts that takes mined rock somewhere.

Ooh...another idea would be to make a [Stonecarn] tag to represent lithovore races.

Those of us on the realism side of things on this question certainly agree.  Improved hauling is critical, if Toady's going to add conservation of matter.

[stonecarn] would be a fun tag.

Precisely; if you want "Realism" to explain this ability, you could say the miner takes extra time to break up the stone, and it is assumed these bits are eventually taken care of when you smooth the rock. Having it slow down mining would be the best way to do it, IMO, as you trade the benefit of high-skill mining (speed) to get rid of the relative nuisance (higher stone production).

The only problem having a lot of stone brings is that it blocks doors and engravings.

I don't think we really need to destroy stone... Only move door blocking stone and hiding the rest.

Breaking up all the stone just gives you a tunnel full of gravel and rubble.
