Entirely unexciting caves
« on: October 18, 2008, 08:08:17 pm »

So.

With my nicely leveled human swordsman and a troop of loyal chumps marksdwarves, I set out to slay the scary dragon.

Except, when I found the cave, I searched it top to bottom and didn't find the dragon.

Disgusted, I relocated to a human town and took a quest to slay a Titan. I get to the map, and instantly I start getting messages about the Titan fainting and regaining consciousness constantly (apparently the town guards did a number on him.) So I know he's on the map- somewhere. But, yet AGAIN, I search the entire cave, and after locating every last staircase and niche, I still haven't found the titan.

What the hell is going on? Are there hidden staircases or something? Ugh!

Check the area around outside the cave.   The easiest way is to toggle sneak as you go, so that as soon as you get in visual range of your target it tells you.

Playing a cheesemaker in an average Fortress 'round here would be. Freaking. Terrifying.

Ah, quite clever. Thank you, sir.

I did snoop around the general area a bit, but I thought it would be kind of odd for the Big Bad Beastie to be lounging around outside the Pit Of Despair... then again, fitting a dragon or a titan in those 1x1 corridors would be quite a trick. :D

Why in the hell did I not think of that? Thanks for the idea.

I'm almost convinced that it might be a bug, that even when caves do have loot and huge monsters, they're usually situated outside.

It's almost as though the game is just throwing them out at ground level instead of where they're meant to be, which is inside. Now, strewing things about so they're disorganized makes sense, but if valuables are to be hoarded at the site of a cave, it is patently obvious that they would be hoarded within it, not strewn like refuse at its outskirts.

If they were going to be treated as refuse to be thrown carelessly away, they wouldn't be localized at a cave... so if they're to be centralized at a cave, clearly they're being hoarded and should be inside.

This increases believability and makes it less abusive on the player trying to find them.

Trick I figured out for making the monsters come to you -- sleep next to the cave entrance.  Repeatedly.  Sooner or later they'll wander past on their way in or out.  I recommend bringing a large party, though -- if you're alone, you won't wake up until it's chewing on your face.

I usually check the first level, the quested monsters I get are typically there.

Learned that from a seven day hunt of an ettin, three days IRL.
