Dwarven Cruise ship - a challenge
« on: October 18, 2008, 07:07:34 pm »

Okay, I think the name is pretty self explanatory;  Basically, you pick any location along any Ocean.  Then you dig out a harbor, but make sure it doesn't flood.  Build a "boat" (a wooden construction supported by a pillar at the bottom) and fill the harbor with water once it's done.  Build a draw bridge that leads to the boat.  Now here are the rules:

-the boat must be able to support 20 dwarves for a season without letting them off or putting food sources on the boat.
-there must be a fully functional fortress on the land.
-no dwarves may die while on the cruise, because that's bad for the cruise's rating.
-just to make things interesting, choose an area that's evil, sinister, or haunted.
-all dwarves on the cruise must be relieved from military duty, but they must not work either.
-no memory hacking (of course).

This should be good >:D

I have a sudden temptation to join in, but i'll probably fail. i don't know how to make pumps work, which does not bode well for a costal fort.

Don't worry, you can build the actual fort away from the coastline.  You can also build walls to keep waves out of the construction pit.

Sorry, I meant to type "land" in the original post.  It's fixed now.

Why not a floating fort on the ocean? That could be cool.

Because a floating fort would be self-sufficient and I think it's been done already.

I was going to, but then I ran into issues with version incompatability.

Yeah, I just read your post in there. I was about to edit mine in this one again.  :P

Why not just swap to 40d, though? Saves are compatible. Just copy and paste the folder.

Sure, go ahead.  You may have trouble with getting a good population though.

I hope a thread devoted to this challenge comes up.

well, i've begun construction at a seaside volcano, since ocean volcano cliffs are too dramatic.

the fort is off to a good start, i've got sand and magma and wood.

update: i've begun pre-military training, digging out of the underground harbor (which i can change to be open to the air if required) and have a stable fort.

but the sharks have come.

and the tuna.

I've begun designing a ship for this - it will be a sternwheeler (I'll just build some waterwheels on the back, mainly for decoration) able to support 32 passengers and a crew of 12. I'm planning on building some farms on the bottom deck, but these won't be used during the challenge.

Do we have to cut down all the wood, or am I allowed to just edit smelter reactions in order to magically create 300 logs out of thin air?
