I just tried the PNG thing with one of Metal Chao's creatures.  Not only does it work, but there was an extra button that allowed me to ban the creature from the game.  Will Wright is now at least half as cool as Toady.

I shall always hope for Will Wright to release an "Expantion pack" that takes everything that was cut and includes it. Less cutesy things, gore, good animations, positions actually doing things, underwater creatures, mating dances and so much more.

Yes, we dislike expantion packs that have things that should be in the original. Still, this is a whole lot more likely than EA suddenly wanting a good game over money.

Let Spore always be an example of What DF could be if released to publishers.

EA: Children cannot die in this game anymore. Now a social worker from the Mountianhomes comes and takes them away. Also, Goblins have the option of leading a peaceful life. Fell moods are taken away, and kittens are no longer butcherable.
Urist: Noooo! Time to throw a tan-
EA: Sorry, tantrums are now expressed as a scalding page of text instead of a real tantrum.
Urist: Tiume to die in the moat...
 EA: Sorry, no suicides.
 Urist: I... I think I need a drink...
EA: Sorry, Alcahol is now only a trade good. You can only drink water.

Even so; they took a lot out that Will wanted in.  With all the procedural work they did, they could have calculated the speed/strike damage/all the other hard stats with some sort of algorithm that analyzed how the creature was built; not the parts that are on it.  That was put in for simplicity's sake.  Most people play games that they know how something works in it.  It's easy to see "This adds 1 to speed... I'll add that" instead of "how could I change the body shape to increase this creature's speed?"

As has been mentioned... It's been dumbed down quite a bit from where they wanted it.  If you don't believe me, look at the first video.  It looked a lot more...  Brutal.  More lifelike than the current poofy Chicken-Run style clouds and trees.  Why?  Kids think that it's fun.  It's gonna be rated E.  Just so EA gets more money.  It all circles around to EA bashing; it really does.

I can understand the complexity meter.  Imagine a creature with 500 heads... That would look stupid, cluttered, and would probably break something.  With the simplistic controls and ideals and graphics(not simplistic in this case; just appealing to children) I could guarantee that kids would try to do something like this...

I thought that I heard there was a way to disable symmetry...  But apparently they took that out.  Just thought that I'd say that. :P

But, the editor really isn't bad.  I really like the idea of the Sporepedia; and that your PNG is actually your save(if that's true, which it's likely).  I also like how small the creatures are.  An average of around 20 to 40 kb for something like that is amazing, in my opinion!  That's about the size of a 2 second MP3, for comparison.  Also, it is pretty freaking easy to use, and yet still allows for some pretty complex designs.  The animations...  Hoo boy!  I don't understand how they did such a good job with that.  That must have been nightmarish.  All of them look exactly like their titles imply, I swear.  I reeeeally got the "sumo" feel, even from a 1 footed creature.

As I'm sure that many others feel;  I'm pleased with what I have, but disappointed because they promised so much more...

But what can you expect...  We don't live in the future, or in a money based on desires of those without money, and EA isn't going to risk money on changing how they do things.  So they had to make it simple, and less awesome.  I was expecting worse than what we got, so I suppose I'm somewhat happy about what we have.  Also, the game will be 50x more fun than the creator, and I'm still having a blast with it.

I don't think it ever 'looked brutal'. Are you remembering the same first demonstration I do? That wasn't brutal, that was /a lack of texture/ as the procedural technology for making the textures wasn't implemented yet. I think the huge wait time since it was first announced has distanced people from what was really shown and promised in the game, as I don't remember any brutal gore, and if there was, I don't remember seeing anything indicating it was gone either

It turns out, my graphics card (Radeon 9250) is too weak for this...
So much for those elder things from Mountains of Madness  :P.
Well, damn. If it is only about the video card then I will also be unable to play this.  :-[ I was gonna try it tomorrow when it comes out.

On totally unrelated note to Spore, since you Fishersalwaysdie have the same graphics card that I do, do some of the games you play make sudden warps at short intervals? It's really really annoying and I'm wondering if it's completely Radeon 9250's fault.

I have 2.96 GHz and 512 RAM, so if you don't have same problems, I'd like to know if these or other things differ a lot.

EDIT: On a related note to Spore, the cartoonish look on the CC makes the immature things look even more perverse.
Well, sometimes now that you mention it, it doesn't really make any problems and I wouldn't have noticed it if you haven't drawn my attention...
I have 1.91 GHz and 1GB of RAM.

Radeon 9250 shouldn't be able to play the game at all so you're lucky it's running, Minimum requirement of Pixel Shader 2.0 (I know that this card doesn't have 2.0 as I used to own the same one)

There was quite a bit of blood, it even dripped out of the creature's mouth as it ate.  There are new videos out which show creatures killing other creatures, and there is no blood.  The creatures were indeed textured.  There is a definite increase in cuteness from the first video to now, but my experience has shown this can be at least partially fixed.  While I am disappointed by the new changes, Spore is still going to be awesome.

Nah.  Will Wright's just an extremely gifted visionary.  Toady's a genius as well.

Lets compare them mathematically.
Cool points("C") of a Game designer is the product of their geniousness, their visions, and the opposite boolean value of whether or not they publish through EA.

CT = 100 * 93 * 1 = 9300
CW = 57 * 100 * 0 = 0

Therefore, expressed in ratios, Will has 0 against Toady's 9300 points, and Toady has 9300 against Will's.

Looking at this figure in fractions, we conclude that if there was ever a true contest between the two for cool points, the world would explode from a "zero in denominator" error when the results were compared.

There was at least blood on the ground when the Will-o-saur tore that one-legged rabbit-thing apart.  You're right, there, there is currently no evidence that it's gone.  But I'd be willing to bet that it's gone.

I wasn't talking about the lack of texturing.  The graphics looked amazing to me back then, but they were a lot less cartoony; more detail on things; more lifelike; less childish.

I like this thing =).
These are my first tries:

It's a pity it has so FEW things...

[EDIT] Oh my god. I'm bored at 7 AM and I've made a dick-monster. I hope it won't upload in someone's world.
http://i25.tinypic.com/2vdldfa.png
But the most terrible thing that it has a spit-attack...
I should get some sleep.

I'm glad they're taking a more cartoony approach, I'm tired of all those games with only shit-brown and gray as colors. (I'm looking at you Gears of War)

Does anyone have some old and new screenshots to do a side-by-side comparison with?

Edit: Spore was made for dick monsters, all that other stuff is just fluff compared to playing an acid spitting penis.

No, spore was made for ELEPHANTS!
Spore Boatmurdered anyone?

P.S. Check it's attacks xD xD xD They are hillarious.

[EDIT] Damn, it's so f****ng easy to master.
I can't wait for the full release. i will unleash my power then. And make an allmighty carp =).

Cow:

I'll hope we'll get some organs with different functionality than attack/stance/grasp. Or just some cosmetic ones. Because it's a bit silly when a cow attacks spitting acid with its udder (reminds me some nice cartoons though).

My attempt at Nyarlathotep:

Obligatory comedy entry:

I'm having tons of fun with this though I wish it would allow a bit more complexity. And damn I didn't know they axed the underwater stage :(, makes sense that EA will want to release it as an expansion (someone please tell me they didn't cut robots though)
