Corpses Wash Up On Shore
« on: October 17, 2008, 02:13:16 am »

Last small rant for the night; corpses in rivers can't be retrieved without massive draining projects.

Solution: Make corpses float to the top of a river, and be able to be fetched by a dwarf with some kind of pole made at a craft shop, or a spear if you feel like making them useful. and wash up onshore.

This is also fully acceptable.

Hm...I don't know. This wouldn't be very realistic if all corpses would be washed to the shore. Perhaps it could work, if it would be based on body weight. Can you imagine as the river is moving the body of a SIZE:200 colossus type creature for example?  ;)

I don't know Tormy. Some animals smaller then humans can't float.

It would be density.

So maybe the formula would be is a creature's Hardness exceeds their weight then they sink.

Though that doesn't work either for some lightweight materials that are also strong. (I guess they could get a "Floats" tag or something)

Edit Addition: I mixed up the formula... Creatures with higher hardness then weight should float... meaning my objection doesn't apply for the most part.

Yeah, you are right Neon. Density is what should be important in this case.
Either way perhaps a new tag in the RAWs for bodyparts and creatures like CAN_FLOAT could work.

You mean [REMAINS_FLOAT]?

Long as all fish/aquatic beasts have it (GOD DAMMIT IT WANT MY CARP LEATHER) this would work. Dwarves would also be highly desired; more "important" stuff that usually doesn't fall in, like giants or colossi, don't need it.

Also, being underwater ought to give some kind of cover bonus if it doesn't already; I know marksdwarves are hesitant to shoot into the water. I would hate for carp/gator sniping to rob rivers of their danger.

Corpses also shouldn't float if they're in metal armor.

Well clearly all the metal falls off when they die, so...

I always took that as the dwarves taking the armor off so the corpse was lighter to carry.

Nop, all creatures are dropping all of their stuff upon death. Don't ask me why.  :)

All bodies with intestinal metabolism will float due to then internal buoyancy created from decomposition, unless they're so heavy that they disarticulate before floating.

If I wanted to recreate the world of one of my favorite stories, I should be able to specify that there is a civilization called Groan, ruled by Earls from a castle called Gormanghast.
You won't have trouble supplying the Countess with cats, or producing the annual idols to be offerred to the castle. Every fortress is a pale reflection of Ghormenghast..

I believe it takes around 48 hours for a human corpse to float to the surface due to gases forming from decomposition as stated before. Thats what concrete shoes were for :D
