Leather Buckets
« on: October 17, 2008, 12:15:50 am »

It's a bit odd that buckets are a)only used for water and b)made out of wood, since historically buckets used for water were made out of leather rather than wood. (or some sort of pottery)

So I think we should be able to make leather buckets.

Not a HUGE suggestion, maybe, but with all the technical and historical accuracy present, it seems like a nice little thing to be added.

I believe that the majority of water holding materials were clay (pots) and leather (waterskins, and an XL waterskin was essentially a bucket), historically.
Metal was too valuable to waste on buckets, and wood buckets wear down fast.

Seconded.

Are you sure those were Buckets? There are many container types out there such as Jugs, Mugs, Skins, and all that.

I am just having a hard time picturing it since it is the first time Ive ever heard of it.

do you have a picture?

Google Image Search results for "leather bucket".  This pic in particular looks good:

Pottery would be an interesting tradeskill addition, but perhaps not Dwarven enough.

It's heavy, and can break easily.

Seriously, common sense is becoming uncommon.

Somehow, that fills me more with dread than anticipation.  It's like being told that someone's exhuming your favorite grandparent and they're going to try to make her into a cyborg stripper.

_water_ is heavy anyway, and stone is cheap in DF.

We already have kilns, although they're used only for potash at the moment IIRC.
Using CLAY (it's found in dirt aka UNDERGROUND) is plenty dwarven and we already have the technology used for it anyway...

Clay pots sounds too much like what the humans would use.

Real Dwarves use kitten leather.

Real dwarves use carp leather.

You have to EARN those buckets.
