Military dwarves and civilian tasks.
« on: October 16, 2008, 07:50:50 am »

We should be able to order military dwarves to operate a siege engine, or pull a lever (since many times a lever is being used to control a defense system). Any other ideas?

..but it that case, what's the point in having a siege operator for example?

Siege operator would become a military skill. Which makes sense.

I am starting to seriously wonder if "Siege opperator" is actually just a place holder / temporary shortcut because Toady couldn't program military units to opperate the machine easily.

I would like to allow military dwarves to hunt. I had a hunter who become Accomplished marksdwarf by hunting, then a kobold thief showed so i drafted him, and he filled the poor kobold with bolts, then his skill jumped to 'Great', so he become elite marksdwarf and I can't send him to hunt anymore... :/

(note that if dwarf's weapon skill jumps to 'Great' while not in military (for example while hunting), he will stay cilivilian, until the first skill level up in military)

You can already do that by allowing them to attack wild animals.

I do think that hunting would probably be a great activity for them to do when they are offduty. (Heck even so much as letting them leave the map)

I'd also like to see a "relocate" command, which orders the crew to break down the engine and rebuild it at a new location. Works best with a crew large enough to carry all the parts and at least some of the ammo.

As the next best thing to having it on wheels (and may still be necessary if it _is_ on wheels, if it can't traverse the terrain - presumably it'd need a 3-wide path and ramps just like the caravan wagon)

I am not sure about that...Hunters are dying very easily, so maybe it wouldn't be wise to use the military dwarves as "hunters"...well maybe if they could hunt in groups.

Hunting in groups is a good idea as well. (Especially for hunters)
-Most of my Hunter Related deaths happened either by Pack of Wolves or the hunter running out of arrows and getting the idea to melee the animal. I always give them TONS of dogs now!

Though remember that you have to expect some amount of death (in fact a lot of death).

A better way to deal with this problem is to have a "military adaptation" mechanic that requires a certain amount of time spent in battle before it becomes impossible to undraft someone, and have that replace the "skill up = elite = permanent soldier" mechanic - or maybe keep the skill-based mechanic but have it only count experience while serving in the military

Hunting in groups is a good idea, although animals also need to *defend* in groups. Currently, even an elephant is really piss-poor about defending itself, whereas realistically, the entire herd should be trying to trample your ass.

Yeah, I agree, and that would be an awesome new gameplay element. Example: Your hunters are attacking X creature, and the creature calls for help [loud yelling for example]. All creatures on the map from the same species will rush to the aid of the attacked creature. Now that would be an epic moment.  :D

Well, only cetain animals. If a hunter is going after hoary marmits, or something docile then he shouldn't get attacked by them. Whenever I go hunting I don't have to fight of rampaging hoards of deer.

Oh but of course...do you remember the velociraptor scene from Jurassic Park [Raptor is calling other raptors]? Now that is an excellent example that what was I talking about.  :)
