just as the title says...is that possible? well its possible since its happening but is it a bug or something?

Happens quite often in fact

They always become craftsdwarves. They need to grow up before they'll work so it's best if you just lock them in the workshop

They have normal moods.  They get stuff, make an object, and get legendary.

Then you have to wait until they grow up for them to actually do anything.

Also you may have to remember to actually switch their labor preferences on when they do.

I've had this happen but I don't think they actually became legendary in anything. Does it only show when they grow up?

You should lock them away in an oublie-- erm, "creche".

They get legendary for any kind of mood except possession, same as adult dwarves. Coupled with the fact that any kid who hangs around for a couple years is going to get legendary grower (assuming you have farms set to "all dwarves harvest") plus lots of social skills, this can make for some incredibly badass dwarven children.
