You know what?  I didn't try it with just stones.  I'll go ahead and check that out since I haven't got around to deconstructing that tower yet.  And it's fine that you're nit-picky, I'm glad you brought that up.  I'm so used to using blocks for construction, I didn't even think about the difference.

(EDIT)  Just tested it with regular stones, worked exactly the same way.  No damage to either the bull or the fool that sealed himself up in the wall with the bull.

Alternatively, place stone on grates and pull the lever

Thanks a lot. This is a great relief for me. So, I only need to worry about the materials dropping on top of statues (After a fall of 6 levels, I think, neither statue nor conglomerate block was damaged) :) :) :)

Building on engraved floors:
Busted. Building on engraved floors does NOT make a wall engraved. So that can't be the cause.

Building walls on engravings was a bug that was fixed a few versions back

Ah, but engravings only improve the value of the room the side it is engraved on. So, do smooth walls act like engraved walls?

Here's a myth for ya; do invaders enter the map  from underground map edges?

There was this player whom had these underground edges, more information here:
I've stumbled across a natural underground "cavern" on my 4 x 9 tile map... it's seven squares wide, one z-level high, meanders up and down across about 10 z-levels... and stretches right across my map, from edge to edge.

Note: unlike underground mining which does not target the extreme edges of the map, this natural underground "cavern" (actually a wide underground passage) does indeed exit the east and west map edges, about ten z-levels underground.

Do I have to worry about Invaders using that route to enter the map?... or will they always use the surface. Do hostile creatures spawn in natural caverns?
Now I would like to see this myth proven of busted.
Currently I believe it is theoretically plausible.

Note that deconstructed falling floors don't do any damage, but constructed falling floors do damage and the dust knocks creatures out.
Giant roof + 1 support + 1 lever + goblins = Science!

But a Midair Obsidian Generator is much more dwarven! ;D

One final note on the "falling non-cave-in* building material does no damage": since cows are sort of big, and since size increases damage resistance in combat, I tested it with animals of different sizes.  Falling non-cave-in diorite blocks dropping from as high as 7 z-levels did no damage to a dog (size 4) or a cat (size 3).  By ruling out the effect that size has on damage resistance, this further confirms that non-cave-in falling objects are unable to hurt things.


*I keep italicizing "non-cave-in" because, as an Officially Licensed Math Guy, I'm OCD about important but subtle** distinctions like that.  And deconstruction vs. cave-in is important that way 8)

Anyone know a way to set up a way to safely cause a cave-in by deconstructing a floor that's supporting another floor next to it, without injuring the dwarf doing the deconstruction? Because it'd be a lot less hassle than messing with levers and mechanisms and supports.

Dwarves prefer to stand in a certain direction relative to what they're deconstructing.  So if you make the last deconstructed floor be one on that side of the cave-in area, the dwarf will stand in a safe spot.

I think the direction in question is northwest, meaning making the last tile be one on the north or west side would be the safe way.  I'm not entirely sure though, so just to be safe, designate some non-critical floor tile somewhere to be deconstructed and see where the dwarf goes to deconstruct it.

The problem there is that cave-ins suck dwarves in. I'm experimenting with bridges now.

On the falling stone thing, designate a dump, and dump stuff down.  See if damage results. It justs needs more testing.  Drop cows on them, also.

Here's a fun one.

I've noticed in my stocks screen that armor worn by merchants appears in red.  I've also noticed that you can flag it for melting.  Will dwarves rip the clothing off of visiting merchants and take it down to the forges to be melted?
