the useless non economic rocks i have noticed made more stone the lower i go....id like this confirmed too

It might just be that your miners are improving in skill.  Also, how are you measuring how much rock is produced?
It is because the miners get better as you mine down.  A legendary miner will produce one stone per mined area where a noob miner might produce something like 1 stone per 5 mined areas.  You will never get more than one stone per tile.  I would say you never get more than one stone per mine event, but I never tested what happens if you mine out two levels using ramping.  I still think that even though you are mining out two levels by building a ramp that it will only produce one stone (of the type of rock where the ramp is.)

thats a HUGE design flaw. better miners = more stone to dump

Pretty much. It sucked gigantic amounts of...feet.

I have a myth, however. I would like to test all the different ways of getting through an aquifer. I know that you can use magma, although how is beyond me...

If this all doesn't fix it, your dwarfs are lazy. Apply magma.

You channel like a 5x5 area in the quifier so you'll get a little self-filling pond. Then you drop magma so it goes obsidian, waits until the magma is gone, and then you can mine through the obsidian :)

2 layers of aquifiers is one of the bigger challengers you can embark upon.
I spent 4 years in a fortress trying different design to get through..
You have to crash a huge amount of layers (15x15, 3+ layers) down, and then build pumps to get through the next, and then build walls next to the quafier walls.

If you get through, anything else will seem like a piece of cake. It's dwarven.

couldn't you just make a 6 by 6 pool, fill it with obsidian, then mine out a 5 by 5 pool then fill that with magma?

Yep... The hardest part is not overfilling and having to wait for the magma to evaporate.

and without magma? how do you do it without magma.
is there a way? Does pathing it to the ocean help if the ocean is still down a few z levels from the aquifer? (ie. it keeps it at a level 3 or somethng where your dwarves can still technically walk?)

does it involve massive numbers of screw pumps?

Lost of screw pumps and walls, and a lot of patience. prepare for "Urist McWallbuilder cancels Construct wall: Site submerged  /  The dwarves have suspended construction of a wall" spam.

an ocean will not be under the aquifer, its a never ending z level of water that covers the entire map..........and now that i think about it it has to end otherwise the entire orld would be an aquifer.

so how does it end?

under? nono. quite often aquifers exist near oceans. if you enter the aquifer with a channel to the ocean, was what I was referring to.

Some deploy areas have areas of aquifers, and some without.  You can see this in the deploy screen by pressing f1-f5 to see if all the biomes have aquifers.  You can also dig around looking for the areas that the aquifer does not permeate, but it's not fun.  I've also had aquifers only occupy certain types of soil and stop at a grouping of rocks.  You could do experimental channeling to find a section that doesn't have aquifer tagged stones, but it's usually easier (and faster) to pump or magma fill to get through.

What he was saying is that an aquifer will never be above an ocean level tile (at least I've never found one..) so channeling out an aquifer will just fill it to 7/7 water.  Channeling it into the ocean will do nothing because it will still be 7/7.  You CANNOT drain an aquifer.  The layer that is tagged aquifer will generate water from every stone tagged as such.  You could mine out the entire aquifer level save one stone and have infinite water.

.38 had lots of aquifers on cliffs above the ocean, btu I haven't tried this since. perhaps you're right.
