Falling magma does not make magma mist: http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-918-magma-fall

Droping stuff in does. Don't know about catapulting stone into magma. Sounds fun either way ;D

That was from a screw pumps.

Screw pumps screw over magma, like making magma flood that beloved magma forge and smelter.

I have two myths for you:

First myth: Crops grow on muddied constructed floor.

Second myth: Constructing a roof above a floor where crops can grow makes it possible for underground crops to grow there.

For this I'd say try it on water.

I think it requires that the floors are still underground, like they would be in the chasm challenge.

I'm not really sure, just posing a hypothesis that can be tested.

I have tested this and confirmed it worked.  My test: I built a basalt roof over my dining room straddling a natural 15z waterfall.  Out of curiousity regarding this very question, I diverted the waterfall onto that roof, muddying it.  I stopped diverting.  I planted fisher berries.  A few months later, my dwarves partied and drank fisher berry wine.

What about the myth that wild animals don't breed, only tame ones do.

The horde of baby walruses outside my fortress say BUSTED.

Wild animals just don't usually hang around long enough to breed.

Yeah, and you even get a message when wild animals have babies.

Some of the Giant Crayfish living in the deep part of the underground river had "Craybies"

Haven't done any tests, but since you're basically describing a greenhouse, which is used to grow aboveground crops, I'd assume that this doesn't work.

Also, I can confirm that magma doesn't flow off map edges. My test wasn't nearly as dramatic as the one already shown, basically just consisting of a tunnel to the edge of the map formed by raised drawbridges, with a screwpump that filled it with magma. When I turned the screwpump off and waited, the tiles stayed at 7/7. Well, it might not have been 7/7... I forget. The point is though, it was consistent, with no magma flowing off the map. This was above ground.

As a suggestion... How about turning magma into obsidian via bucket-brigade? I heard somebody say that it didn't work, but I'm not sure how full the magma tile was... I think magma only turns into obsidian once it reaches 1 or 2/7 before coming into contact with water, with any water added before that turning the water into steam and making some magma disappear. Not positive though. That might be worth looking into as well.

Then there's the artificial chasm rumor... Looking at the thread about it, it would seem my best bet would be to collapse some ice on the bottom z-level, then melt it. If that doesn't work, I can try to take advantage of those bugs which turn random tiles into empty space, then try dropping things in them. I'll post any results I might get.

I've tried many times without success.  7/7 magma burns off the water, 1/7 does as well.  I've even created 20 buckets to see if I could get several dwarfs to dump water on it at once figuring it had to be 2 units of water.  None of my experiments have worked with this method so far.

Second myth: Constructing a roof above a floor where crops can grow makes it possible for underground crops to grow there.

i confirmed this ages ago. building a farm plot underground, then channeling a single square and building a roof on top allows you to plant both underground and overground plants.

haven't tried constructing a room with a farm plot inside. might do that now.

Hmm... some more variables about farm plot mechanics that come to mind:

* Farm plot creation time
* Changes to farm plot light availability/cover after creation
* Farm plot size overlap between aboveground and belowground

Examples:
- What if you construct an underground plot and then channel out all the area above it? Does it only allow aboveground, only allow belowground, or allow both?
- Does this change after you deconstruct the plot and remake it?
- What about constructing a floor over an existing aboveground plot? Making one entirely under a constructed floor?
- What if part of a multi-square farm plot is aboveground, and part of it is belowground? Can it plant both types of crops, or just one? If it can plant both, are only the aboveground plot squares used for aboveground crops and vice versa?

SCIENCE!

SCIENCE!

1. it only allows aboveground plants.
2. no.
3. tested my above theory. building a roof over an aboveground farm still only allows aboveground plants.
4.only aboveground plants.

I remember reading something about glass blocks/windows as a cover making a pseudo-greenhouse, but I can't seem to find it now and I don't remember if glass mattered.
