Can you alter that desalination plant so it has all constructed floors, but not all constructed walls?  It would be interesting to see if walls actually have an effect.

Thanks for all the aquifer info.  I've learned a lot.

"Losing is fun," as they say.  I'm on the verge of losing my second attempt at taming a terrifying coastal glacier w/ magma pipe and saltwater aquifer, yet I'm having a great time learning new things to do and not do.

I thought I had a pretty good handle on Dwarf Fortress, but a combination of zombie sasquatches, fire imps, saltwater, snowstorms, tantrums spiraling into insanity, thirst, cold, fire, and above all else a shortage of wood have challenged me in new ways.

Hint: If you embark on a glacier bring lots of wood.  Driftwood is fail.

Thats a good one, though it isnt exactly a myth.
To an extent it can be a myth, depending on how you word it. Here's the simplest one: "Can a dwarf/goblin/elf survive a fall of X z-levels?" :P We all know that really high falls will kill the creature and really small falls will only stun or injure it, but info on the middle-ground isn't really set in stone

Do heavy objects actually scatter less when going from fortress to adventure mode?


In my experience, this is true. I mainly base this off any stone stockpiles that might be around, as for the most port the stone is all there. However, I have rearely explored a fort since way back in the 2D version, so my evidence is rather thin on this.

Basically, the main thing about proving this is to find out whether or not it does help to use Lead bins when making 'vaults' for adventurers to find.

Fall damage, from what I have seen, is random, with more possible damage happening the father you fall.  I have one time tried to drop cats into a 4z fall hole in an atempt to lower their population, I have noticed that the injuries varied from instant death to random injuries all over the body.

I haven't tried this myself yet, but do you have any obsidian (or magma you can mix with water)?  I've been told that constructing a floor over an obsidian block, and then removing it, creates black sand.

There was a post a while back about someone who was on a sandless map, had a dragon arrive, and had a sand area afterwards.  They thought it was from dragon fire, other people thought it was from trample by the dragon, nobody was able to prove whether it was a glitch or an unknown feature.  Someone suggested getting a bunch of tame dragons in an enclosed area and letting them tramp around for a long time to see if anything occurs.  So can dragons or any other megabeasts make sand on a sandless map?  (Of course, this is hard to prove to the negative if there is merely a slim chance of it happening.)

Magma pipes fill from the bottom? Not on my map (unless I'm misunderstanding how it works).

I've got a magma pipe that I've drained several z-levels out of to power my massive horrible-horrible-instaburningdeath siege defense system. The pipe tries to refill by dropping little blobs of 7 magma from the TOP z-level of the pipe, from where it used to be filled to. The blobs fall a few z-levels and then splash onto the top of what's left of the magma pipe below.

This mechanic might be triggered by the "Magma source" tiles at the very bottom but the filling definitely seems to happen up at the top of the magma pipe.

I haven't tried building a floor a few levels down in the drained magma pipe to see what happens then. Maybe I'll give that a shot and see what happens. I bet the bottom "half" of the pipe won't refill at all, and the top half will fill up to where it used to be, giving me an infinite magma pool. Actually creating the floor without everyone getting burned by magma splattering all over it may prove difficult however... ideas?

Well, if you have enough architects you could build large bridges, which will be built from a position of relative safety.

Once i had a sort of, magma "aquifer" a couple squares away from my magma pipe i channeled and there was magma.....idk if that is possible or not

I tested it.  Built a floor on the obsidian surrounding a volcano, removed it, silty clay loam.  Mixed some magma and water, built a floor on *that*, removed it, silty clay loam.  Dug out the obsidian that was created, built a floor on *that*, removed it, silty clay loam.

So I'd have to say busted.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

Here is something I want tested

Is it true when fighting a Bronze Collosus with Dwarves that mixing Wrestlers (Champion) with ordinary Dwarves is an effective strategy or at least a better strategy because the Bronze Collosus will always attempt to break locks instead of attacking?

Or if you don't want to do that...

Is it true that Firebreath allows Megabeasts to survive longer and more often then ones without during world generation?
