Is cave adaption really permanent?
It seems to me that it isn't.  My military spent almost all their time indoors before being drafted, but after a few years of being stationed outdoors ~3/4 of the time they don't seem to be stunned or vomiting.
Maybe I just haven't caught them in the act.

Hmm... did you keep a record of the outer room's value?

Just for rigor's sake - there could hypothetically have been some bug in the latest version that made engravings ineffective.

Damp stone != aquifer flood

I think the reason my marble layer is damp is because there's an aquifer above it, but that it will be safe to mine the marble anyway.

Anyone have a list of the porous and nonporous stones?  I think marble is safe, but I don't know for sure.

I'm about to find out ... just saved and am preparing to dig out some damp marble.

LOL, I guess marble is porous after all.  I dug out some lava to stop the flood and my miner got insta-cooked.  Lava + water = fastest way to build a wall.

I've heard of a booze bomb, and people saying that it's false, and I've never seen it before. Does the booze actually create an explosion, or is it just red steam?

I'd like to know, too. I've tried placing alcohol stockpiles in my magma-deathtrap entrance to add a little extra zaz, but they're always empty when the goblins arrive :(

In my experience, Aquifers don't really care about the porosity of a rock. It's just there or it's not.

I've found that, generally, you won't find a rock aquifer, unless its a porous sedimentary rock. however, when you get waterfalls etc, it can really start to mess things up.

In conclusion: if you get a dam stone warning, and you have not revealed a water source above it (an undug aquifer does not count), odds are good your map will flood if you dig it out.

From my experience, I'd say and aquifier level 1z above where you are mining will always flood down, no matter what the stone layer you are digging is. I like to think of it like this:

Code: [Select]
###   <- Aquifer layer
---   <- Aquifier layer 'floor' (made of the same stuff as the aquifier layer)
%%%   <- Other rock layer
¬¬¬   <- Rock layer floor

Since theres only a water permeable 'floor' between the aquifier and the rock layer, the water comes down through the roof of the tunnel in that first rock layer.

Do screw pumps pressurize magma, allowing the magma to go up to the hight of the screw pump?

Yes.  Oh, god, yes.

Do magma vents fill from the top or bottom?

Bottom.  I believe the technical description is that the "Magma flow" tiles generate the lava, which under normal circumstances flows up to the top.  However, I had a pipe where I channeled out the rock above a magma flow square, as so:

Code: [Select]
(Side view)

_____X7777777
____ X7777777
___XFFFFFFFFF

_ = floor, X = wall, 7 = magma, F = magma flow

The end result is that second story room flooded with magma.  Channeling a tunnel away from the pipe and then building up is fine -- only the magma flow tiles seem to exhibit this behavior.

Does catching fish in a river have anything to do with the actual number of vermin swimming in the water?

Well, yes.  The fish you catch are the vermin.  Do you mean the fish you see on the map?  Then no.

Does smoothing walls only improve the value of the room from the side they're smoothed from?

No, it improves the value of both sides.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.
