I've noticed in my stocks screen that armor worn by merchants appears in red.  I've also noticed that you can flag it for melting.  Will dwarves rip the clothing off of visiting merchants and take it down to the forges to be melted?
No, designating for melting does not achieve anything. Designating for dumping does though ;) But that's cheesy... it means heaps of steel armor from the start, if your civ has access to steel

I was wondering this today: If you fire a wooden bolt from a ballista through a lava-fall (water fall, but with lava), does it catch on fire? And if so, does it stay on fire through flight?

I was reading this topic (http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=31355.0) when I came up an idea to help the guy who posted it.

Now , my "myth" is that

Can you , with enough time and energy (and dwarfs) , drown the ocean ? Using the same method Dutch Settlers used to down lakes?

1. Cut of a part of the ocean so NO water can get to it (most hard part)
2. Pump out ALL the water
3. Clean
4. Repeat step 1-3

Does anyone know if a rock fired by a catapult that hits a wall and falls down will hurt a creature beneath it? I was thinking that might be a way to use catapults that are a few z-levels higher then the target.

So, something like this:

Catapult_____ *|
                   | |
                   | |
                   | |
                   |g|
                   ---

Anyone know what'll happen? Or does this need to be tested?

The problem there is that cave-ins suck dwarves in. I'm experimenting with bridges now.

   .-----.
   |     |
X++|++#+ |
   |     |
   '-----'

X is stairs, box is a bridge, the +'s are floors under the bridge, the # is a floor (under the bridge) designated to be removed. Removing dwarf was able to remove the floor and walk away without being hit by the dust cloud (though since I built the test rig only one level above the ground, he walked into it when he went down the stairs)

Yes.  It's really annoying to do, and cuts your FPS to FPM.  Draining into an aquifier is probably easier, though.

A better one would be firing past a burning metal bin full of lignite or coal blocks.  They burn forever, and for always.  And are particularly burnination.

Also, does coal fired from a catapult ignite while flying past said blocks, or through a magma fall?

Drown? You mean drain?

If you have a magma pipe, you might try and make an obsidial wall with a constructed-wall/floor scafold, then drop it down to isolate part of the ocean. 'Natural' obsidian rock, that is, as with your typical obsidian farm. Can also be done one ayer at a time, stacking until it reaches the surface.

The proven method is to drain it with pumps until it's shallow enough for dwarves to work in, but you have to fight the influx of fresh water until you have the dam up.

A better one would be firing past a burning metal bin full of lignite or coal blocks.  They burn forever, and for always.  And are particularly burnination.

Would people stop saying that? The Stupid Coal Tricks thread tested this, and while it takes a long time, the coal will degrade and eventually be destroyed.

which is even better because unlike a real nuclear bomb the block will degrade in a dwarfs lifetime thus rendering the area usable again.

Then I suppose you'd be surprised to learn that Hiroshima and Nagasaki are thriving modern cities with a combined population in excess of 1.5 million.

I don't think it was tried firing coal stone past a burning bin, out of a catapult.  Also, firing ballista bolts past one of the bins.  Or did I miss something?

kay.

Is the area of a murky pond exposed to the air equivalent to the water captured while raining.
Or is only evaporation affected?
So myth or fact: a pool needs to be open/outside to fill.

ooh. good one. I'm sad this has langushed so long. I'm having trouble finding a non-freezing, with-rain biome to test it in, however.

I don't know about "outside", but I know for a fact that they don't have to be open to fill.  I have a 3x3 pool in the center of my current fort that fills and drains according to the seasons, despite the fact that I have it covered under rhyolite blocks.
