Examples:
- What if you construct an underground plot and then channel out all the area above it? Does it only allow aboveground, only allow belowground, or allow both?
- Does this change after you deconstruct the plot and remake it?
- What about constructing a floor over an existing aboveground plot? Making one entirely under a constructed floor?
- What if part of a multi-square farm plot is aboveground, and part of it is belowground? Can it plant both types of crops, or just one? If it can plant both, are only the aboveground plot squares used for aboveground crops and vice versa?

SCIENCE!

3. tested my above theory. building a roof over an aboveground farm still only allows aboveground plants.

I remember reading something about glass blocks/windows as a cover making a pseudo-greenhouse, but I can't seem to find it now and I don't remember if glass mattered.

i confirmed this ages ago. building a farm plot underground, then channeling a single square and building a roof on top allows you to plant both underground and overground plants.

haven't tried constructing a room with a farm plot inside. might do that now.
So this bug only really kicks in when you build a plot completely underground at first, then channel out only part of the roof and cover it again without remaking the plot?

As a suggestion... How about turning magma into obsidian via bucket-brigade? I heard somebody say that it didn't work, but I'm not sure how full the magma tile was... I think magma only turns into obsidian once it reaches 1 or 2/7 before coming into contact with water, with any water added before that turning the water into steam and making some magma disappear. Not positive though. That might be worth looking into as well.
I've tried many times without success.  7/7 magma burns off the water, 1/7 does as well.  I've even created 20 buckets to see if I could get several dwarfs to dump water on it at once figuring it had to be 2 units of water.  None of my experiments have worked with this method so far.
Bucked brigade works qite well with obsidian making. You just need to know a little trick: When you designate the pond on the tile above magma, it does not work: dwarves insert water from buckets just inside magma, some check doesn't work -> no obsidian. However, if you designate the pond one level above that, water from buckets will be thrown at the tile ABOVE magma, then fall into magma via gravity. The check works -> you have obsidian.
There's a fort under my sig, it has a POI "Project Octahedron". The obsidian columns in the lower part are made this way.
And one more thing: when you have only 1/7 of magma it will disappear without creating obsidian.

It's not a bug. Part of your plot is aboveground and another part is belowground. You can plant aboveground crops on the first part and belowground ones on second part. Absolutely logical.

no, tried that ages ago. if you designate to dig stuff and jump up a z-level, the whole designation will also jump up to the z- level you're currently at.

Rooms are a pathing check from the base object anyway, not a designation.
You can't set a specific area for the room.  But that'd be cool.

Certain layers of stone produce more rocks when mined, especially if they're deeper down.

This is a little observation I've made that I'd like confirmed...

If you're thinking about HFS, it always produces a rock.
At least that's what I noticed when my novice miners dug it out.

It might just be that your miners are improving in skill.  Also, how are you measuring how much rock is produced?

That's an easy one to test:

Find a map with that rock layer, and a control rock layer. Mine a single tile staircase all the way to the bottom. Once that's finished, save the game, and designate a section of rock on the control layer and mine it out. Check the amount of rock. Kill the process, and repeat with the test rock. You'll probably want a working clerk for this as well.
