My attempt at a flat fortress
« on: October 14, 2008, 02:06:10 am »

Hello, I have just joined this forum but have played before. but today I begin my most epic quest

Flat Fortress - Maximum size

I have yet to embark, but already the signs are auspicious, the name of my fortress is Delerurdim, STEEL TOWERS.

7 dwarves will set out to the east, far far, to the east, and construct a glorious fortress for all the mountainhomes to behold. they are

Inod Degmeng: Miner/Hammerdwarf
Kib Ilnomal: Mason/Wrestler
Domas Urvadaral: Stoneworker/Farmer
Kol Eseshducim: Broker/Recordkeeper
Dakost Zonlerom: Woodcutter/Carpenter/Axedwarf
Rimtar Tulonginon: Hunter/Speardwarf
Unib  Zimkeliden: Smith/Cook

Together these 7 dwarves will strike the earth, and attempt to found a great city on the plains.

Plains?!  Not even a forest?!  What are you going to build your "fortress" out of?

Mod the data for the cat and have it provide 100 fat... "CAT SOAP TOWERS!"  :D

I couldn't easily see where to make them breed really fast...but 100 fat per cat should provide enough for a floor or two.

Do soap block walls/constructions dissolve in water by the way? That could be fun.

I can imagine what those cats would look like. Pure butter balls!  :D

Cat soap towers would be awesome, plus your dwarves would be nice and clean.

Keep us posted on this, I'd like to see your solution to this task.

I think you're going to have a serious pathing nightmare unless everyone stays in their own little sectors and never has to go cross-fortress. Keep us posted.

do you have a magma pipe on your map? you could create layers of obsidian on top of each other with water (assuming you have that, too) for your walls.
Non-constructed walls in a complete perimeter + all dwarves inside = epic win afaik

I wouldn't give the miner an extra combat skill.  They already have mining, which will quickly rise to legendary, allow them to use picks as their default weapon, and maxing out their agility, making them some of the best emergency conscripts in the game.

I forget what picks count as when you hit something with them, so hammering, just in case, I did have extra points.

:Update:
I started off by digging into the earth, and oh fuck aquifier, I freaked out and revealed and found magma, apparently, UNDER, the aquifer. therefore I am proceeding with a screw pump system to work with this. in other news, my spearhunter apparently lost his spear and proceeded to beat horses to death with his bare hands, before being trampled on, he's still alive and so I must assign healers. finally I have the resources to begin glassmaking soon, I will probably be using glass to wall off the aquifer levels and get to the ROCK with which to build my mighty towers.

Picks use the mining skill in combat, which is why miners make such excellent militia. Well, that and the good crit multiplier on picks

Ah. I was under the impression you were digging to the stone layer and were going to make a map wide 1 level fortress underground.

I <3 flat maps.  Most of my forts are on them.  That's not a challenge.
