Goblins that seem to give up
« on: October 13, 2008, 10:18:24 pm »

So, I've been noticing something recently, I'm not sure if it's an artefact of the recent world-gen changes or something I just didn't notice before.

Once I've had a few goblin sieges I find that, on checking the Goblins entry in the civ menu, they're all out of commanders and only have a ruler and a whole bunch of Goblin Recruits.  Interestingly, those recruits tend to be named, indicating world-gen notable kills.  More alarmingly, however, it is at about this point that sieges seem to stop.  I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I get three or four sieges in the first five years, then once the available squad commanders are all dead the goblins just give up.

This annoys me, because I love hearing about the ten-squads-all-attacking-at-once sieges described on this board, but I never seem to get them.  By the time my fortress worth is high enough to get such huge sieges, the goblins have given up.

Anyone else noticed this?  I thought goblins got more numerous and sieges more frequent as you annihilated previous sieges and grew in total worth.  Am I wrong?

"Know what? Fuck you, dwarves. We're going into banking."

They wised up and decided to leave you alone.

Banking, just right now, has got to be the only profession worse than "being shot by champion marksdwarves from behind fortifications then annihilated by champion axedwarves who pop out of the ground behind you".  On the other hand, being shot and hacked to bits doesn't come with an implicit guarantee of a government bailout plan, so maybe it's not such a bad idea to switch.

Ew, politics.

Anyway, re: goblins, they tend to give up once they've exhausted their numbers.  In the older versions, yes, they would constantly keep increasing attacks, but I've heard numerous reports that after a while they just stop trying nowadays.

I can't say it's a change for the better.  The game is easy enough without stopping sieges.

Huh...I've never seen anything like that sadly. 10 squads of goblins attacking in the same time? Nah, I don't think that it can happen. The biggest goblin army what I've seen had 6 squads, and I am playing for quite a long time.  :)

You know, that would be an awesome game mode: you have a set amount of time to build and fortify before a massive gobbo invasion comes in.  Then you need to survive for as long as possible against an endless siege.

Harry Potter was far easier prey, and Gringotts would become prosperous. It was a good day to be a Goblin.

Game just needs to be harder, imo.

Game is too easy for now. (Except if you embark at an haunted ocean with land walking skeletal sharks)

I hope ToadyOne makes Goblins as bloodthirsty as before so we get some fun :P.

Only in Dwarf Fortress would you try to catch a mermaid to butcher her and make trophies out of her bones

Nop, the problem is that the siege system itself is very ineffective. [..but its pointless to talk about this, since everyone knows this already + there are lot of suggestions about how to upgrade the sieging system]
Basically try to modify the goblins, make them stronger, don't use traps/defensive mechanisms and moats, and the sieges will be quite challenging.

This. Also, being deliberately underprepared helps. SPARTA!

My only defensive mechanism right now is a magma flood system that will bury my fort in magma and seal me off for a considerable length of time if used. I only intend to use it when it's guaranteed to incinerate an entire siege.

And if you really want a challenge try replacing goblins altogether with GCSs. Just dont bother fiddling around allowing them to hold weapons, this actually decreses their effectiveness as the weapons they use are weaker than their base attack.
