The elves returned, and for once they have done us a favor by discovering one of the child thieves lurking a short distance from our gates.  They didn't attack the creature, which just shows pure stupidity on their parts, but the elven merchants did show some small signs of sense as they promptly fled in all directions.  The goblin, even more unfortunately, got away.  The elves did eventually make their way to our depot, to our great irritation.

"Greetings, dwarf friends.  How have you fared since our last meeting?"  The merchant leader said with a half-bow.
Durien crossed his arms over his chest and glared up at the towering elf.  "There're five o' yer an' yer couldn' kill one gob'in?  What sort'er cowards are yer?"
The elf drew himself up straight...and smacked his head on the low ceiling.  With a wince he put a hand up to the bruised skull as he replied, "We do not harm any of nature's creatures.  They all have a purpose and a place, removal of even one before their time will harm the balance of things."
The elf's patronizing attitude would have been insulting, had he not been bent over with a hand holding his throbbing head.  As it was, Durien was more inclined to laugh.  "Oh, tha' reminds me, watch out fer th' ceilings, they may be a bit on th' low side.  We forgit that some critters'er so much taller than they oughter be.  Bu' really.  Five elves can't kill a single gob'in?  Mark m'words, they'll come after yer too!"  Then again, that wouldn't be so bad, thought Durien though he controlled the impulse to say the words out loud.
The elf almost made a face, but restrained himself just in time.  These dwarves were so much more trouble than they by rights should be.  "I suppose tree-butchers such as yourselves would not understand.  Care to trade?"

OOC: @Heavy Flak, thanks, I like writing it.

Ambush!
That is all we can think about ever since the party of six goblins was discovered practically at our gates.  Fortunately, we now always have a pair of soldiers stationed there, and so Vucar gave the alarm.  Unfortunately Thob, who was supposed to be sharing the job, had decided to take a break and had left to get a drink, leaving Vucar to battle six goblins by herself.  I am proud to call myself her friend, for she did not hesitate and charged boldly into the fray, sustaining serious injuries in the process from the crossbowgoblin accompanying the group.  Ablel, who had seen the goblins from within the relative safety of the entry, went berserk and charged out after Vucar.  The two brave dwarves fought fiercely, and between them managed to kill all of the goblins.  The goblins did manage to kill one of our war dogs and a few puppies, their deaths buying time for Vucar and Ablel, but we have managed to destroy the first incursion.  I do not doubt that there will be more.

Both of our heroes are resting now, recovering from their injuries which, though serious, do not appear to be life-threatening.  In addition, we have accorded Ablel the title "The Ambiguity of Verses", as her every movement in the battle was true dwarven poetry.

Vucar is demanding water.  Water!  Everyone knows no self-respecting dwarf will drink water when there's booze to be had!  I suppose I must blame this odd behavior on her injuries, but I had not realized they were that serious, just one leg broken and the other badly mangled.

Now Ablel is acting the same way, demanding water.  I thought she was one of the steady sort, but clearly not when she's injured, and her wounds aren't even that serious, just a broken arm.

Vucar has been screaming for food and water the last few days.  Clearly, the others think their breaks are more important than the life of one of our own.  Apparently if you want something done, you've gotta do it yourself.  Now where did I last see that bucket...?

OOC: @Sarasti, welcome!

"Th' humans're back," Thob called down the hallway to where Durien was catching up on some bookkeeping.
"Righ'!  Brin' up th' trade junk!  Oh, an' we migh's well see if'n they'll take that useless gobbo junk."

A few minutes later...
"Uh, guys?  Yer migh' wanter ferget abou' th' trade stuff an' git ou' here."  Libash was as calm as usual, watching what was happening outside.
"Why?  They'll be here any minu---"  Durien had come out and stopped, distracted by the scene before him.
The humans had been ambushed by goblins, just as the elves had been in the spring.  And, instead of fleeing like cowards, they were giving as good as they got.  But it was clear that they were out-numbered and out-classed.
"So're we goin' ter help 'em?"  Libash asked.
"Shoul' we?  Mebbe we shoul' wai' an' kill whatever th' humans can' deal wif?"  Durien responded.
But he never received an answer as, at that moment, Litast came charging out of the mountain screaming obscenities and smashing into the nearest goblin before they knew what was happening.
"Hey!  Wai' fer us!  Yer can' 'ave all th' fun!"  Thob chased after him.
Bemused, Durien glanced at Litast, who jerked his head toward the ensuing carnage.  "Guess we don' 'ave much of a choice."  Durien agreed, and the two dwarves headed into battle.

Some time later, the four dwarves looked around at the carnage.  Corpses, both human and goblin, surrounded them, along with pieces and unidentifiable chunks.  Blood soaked the ground, and the dwarves were liberally splattered with it.  Durien leaned on his axe and looked over at the humans.
"Th' depot's open, if'n yer wanter trade."
The remaining humans seemed relieved.  "A place tah sit'n rest ah spell would be appreciated, thanks.  Ah've never seen the like."  The human said, shaking his head in disbelief.  "We git the occashional goblin at Gil Ocda, but on'y ever one er two atta time, and they never ambush like this."
"Well m' frien', it's like this.  Where we come from, there's this one group o' gobbos..." And Durien escorted the humans inside.

I write this entry with a heavy heart for Datan has died.
The goblin party which ambushed our human allies just a few days ago was accompanied by a child-thief.  Datan came across the creature in the early hours of the morning, as he was on his way to clean up some of the remaining goblin junk from that battle.  He attacked the goblin, but was fatally wounded before Thob, who was on gate duty at the time, could reach him.  Ast is even now constructing a stone coffin in which his bones may be laid to rest, and Ablel will begin digging out tombs as soon as she is healed.
I had found it surprising that one of our dwarves fall to a mere thief, since we have all trained at wrestling at some point.  However, looking back in my records, it is only now that I notice Datan was the only one of us who never trained.
We will hold a simple internment ceremony as soon as the coffin is complete, and his final resting place has been carved out, but for now has body has been placed in a closed off part of our halls, awaiting the formal burial.
May his spirit-self walk with the gods.

Among the corpses we finally got around to cleaning up, we found several poor puppies, cut into pieces.  As we need every single dog for our protection, I've ordered a cage built in our outside enclosure to house the pups in.  At least they will be safer than the rest of us there.

Finally!  Ablel has pronounced herself healed and ready to commence work once more, after she's had her first decent drink in months.

The Kabcatten merchants have returned, bringing more meat and plump helmets, and little else of importance.  I managed to trade quite a bit of the useless goblin junk for the food.  Litast is waiting for Ast to build him a smelter, and then the useless metal goblin junk will be melted down into useable iron bars.  True armor is not far away!

Ablel has finished carving out Datan's tomb, and Libash, Kivish and Zuglar have worked nonstop for the last few days smoothing all the walls.  Today we performed the final duty of the living to the dead, placing Datan's skeleton into his coffin and then we all, save Thob who remained on guard, escorted him to his final resting place, deep within the bowels of the mountain.  May his eternal sleep be undisturbed, and may his spirit guard us in our duty to Olon Thasdoth.

The circle of life goes on, one dwarf dies, another is born.  Kib has given birth to her third daughter, and the proud parents have named her Sazir, or "Bridge".  I asked Kivish what he meant by that, and he explained that it seemed appropriate, since children form a bridge between the past and the future.
