And where are the best places to find roaches?

You'll get an alert saying you have disturbed a bunch of vermin, and then you can pick them up from the area.  Roaches are underground, but you can find different types in all sorts of places.

I think I've disturbed roaches inside dark towers too.
I don't remember where I picked up the one that I just ate, it'd been my pet for ages.


I guess I should be looking to find a cave, if I want to catch me some dinner.

Live creatures make the most amusing ammunition, especially when you kill a minotaur by throwing a rat through his ribcage and afterward you extract the perfectly healthy rat from the minotaur's shattered chest.

Extra plusses if the rat is burning, since cats are the only thing besides eating that can kill them.

How come you can eat LIVE roaches but not lick the blood of your *Cougar Leather Loin Cloth*?

Because you EAT the roach, and DRINK the blood.  Simple as that.  If you're not thirsty, you won't consume it.


Also, the "Shift+L" command will cause you to look around for random vermin in the nearby area.  If you're in a good place for it, they'll show up in the squares adjacent to you (or, sometimes, right underneath you).

I ate a live turtle once.  Didn't get a shell afterwards, so I guess I ate that too.


Also, a burning rat will eventually deteriorate.  They just get sort of "worn out", and you can see the negative modifiers on their name (like "xX!!live worm!!Xx").  Although they will eventually wear out, they do last a very long time.  I know, I've tried it with beetles.

But if you're in need of a snack, there are a couple ways you can get food by killing enemies.  First, you dismember them and get them to bleed all over the place.  If you wait for a while, flies will begin to gather in swarms.  Step into a swarm and you'll be able to pluck lots of single, live flies out of it.  These are highly nutritious.

Otherwise, get them to throw up and then f(I)ll a backpack from the pool of vomit.  You can eat that.


If you're out in the wilderness, anthills can also provide food.  Stand on top of one and you will be able to pick out as many ants as you could ever possibly want to eat.

When I try to Drink blood, it says No, Thats Disgusting! and won;t let me drink it, do I have to be really thirsty?

 I do remember people talking about using vomitus blood and bloody vomit to eat on mountain voyages, because they don't freeze.
