I had always assumed that encrusting bolts with gems would make them do more damage. You know, like diamond-tipped bolts or something. Alas, this is not the case, although I suspect it will be in the future.

I generally just use my gems to encrust finished goods. This usually means the mountain of stone crafts i've created becomes a shiny pile of stone crafts, which are a lot more valuble for trading. Towards the end of my last fortress I could buy out entire caravans with a handful of crafts (masterwork crafts with masterfully set gems naturally).

The one thing that does bug me though is that apparently ropes count as finished goods as well. How exactly does one go about encrusting a rope with gems??

Is it even possible to choose what gets encrusted?

I have the option of choosing finished goods but thats as far as that goes, I`m starting to think I really do need to lock him in a room and just dump the items I want done down into his hole.

That's pretty much the only way to choose what gets encrusted: lock him in a room with the gems and the one item you want him to decorate.

They just showed up with more dead animals. I'm definitely using elf bone if the morons refuse to keep the animals warm. This cold biome bug is starting to get irritating
As far as I know, elf bone isn't very valuable. The most expensive bones are dragon bones, 25 times more expensive than cow bone, although of course it's very hard to get. Giant cave spiders and trolls have rather valuable bones too, if you have access to any. If you're interested, the value of crafts made from body parts (leather, bone crafts, totems etc) depends on the creature's MODVALUE. You can look it up in the raws.

Yeah I would have used troll bone if the goblins actually came with trolls. Or beak dogs for that matter

Do they have to live in swamps for that feature to work?

I just like to build up a big ol' horde of gems from the caravans, and then I just sit there and have them. They look pretty, all locked up in a vault. It's nice.

Yeah this is pretty much what I do.  Sometimes I build gem windows because you can get the gems back by deconstructing it.

Fire imp bones and skulls make very valuable crafts, at least the most valuable I ever had.

Beak dogs only live in evil marshes. I haven't had trolls come with the goblins neither, but I've had them in both caves and chasms.

Sorry, you're right. I was thinking about giant cave swallows.

Ha, I've had trolls.  Skull totems from them were worth like 500.

I was having some major problems with my jewelers always trying to encrust barrels, bins, and pigtail bins to the exclusion of all else. Then I figured out that all you have to do is put a storage area directly above or below your jeweler and stock it with only the items you need. And, whatever you do, never build your jeweler anywhere near your carpenter. The bastard will literally steal a bin right from a carpenter's hand when eight beds are waiting for their bling.

On a mostly unrelated topic, I recently had a legendary craftsdwarf whom I had to draft into the army come one really bad siege. I firmly hold that the bastard was carving skull totems and bone craftscrap while they were still (however momentarily) inside the enemy's body.

Ah, good days.

Well, saving the game when my weaponsmith got a fey mood and save scumming doesn't seem to have done anything to the list of items he wanted. On the other hand he specifically demanded steel bars and always made a spear by the same name. I've never seen that happen before, maybe weaponsmiths are special. Just one more reason to make sure your smiths like steel I guess. He also liked spears

Irritating considering I use hammers and only hammers
