« on: October 12, 2008, 06:54:18 pm »

im in the process of building an above ground castle made entirely from shale. after making about 4 z levels of floors ive realized that i cant engrave or smooth these walls, is there a value i can change in the data files to make these engravable?

Nope; at the moment, Constructed walls are hardcoded differently from natural walls, so it would require a change in the source code.

They still appear like smoothed, so no worries there, but if you want them truly smooth, you've got to make it out of blocks and not the raw stone.
No engraving..  Hopefully that's something Toady adds later..  Using a chisel would make sense...
EDIT: You could in theory attempt to change them to a natural wall using Tile Edit and then proceed normally...

No engravings, but you can do things like make gold panels in the walls and floors if you want to increase room value, I suppose.

No, you have to make the entire wall out of the material, not panels.
(Not that it'd use a different amount of material in either case, just clarifying)

Meaning it's better than an engraving because it's on both sides?

Masterwork engravings are probably worth more then any material you could make them out of, but otherwise yes.

You can still engrave the ground level though. Boulders and stuff that can be smoothed can also be engraved.

Tile edit can also be used to designate walls for engraving, no matter what the walls are made out of.  I did this with a sand wall once. :)

If you redesignate the room on the other side, the sidedness disappears with engravings.

ah, so only the rooms that the dwarf is standing in when engraving register a change?  That makes sense.

What's this about room value? That is intriguing.

How does flooring work with that - say, having a room of Valuable Material, and then a decor pattern with different-colored Less Valuable Materials.

What?
It simply adds up the worth of the contents.
Multiple tile "patterns" are no more effective than the materials they're made out of.
Engravings only work from the side that they're engraved from unless you designate the rooms after engraving or redesignate the one that it wasn't engraved on.
You can still engrave the ground level though. Boulders and stuff that can be smoothed can also be engraved.
Walls are not boulders and stuff.
