Just asking because I haven't seen any threads on this.

Glad to see it back up and running.

 And, apparently, fixed it.

At first I found it odd when I first found the forums were back up that there was not a thread on it. Then again, the forums were down. Who wold make a thread when the forums are down?

I haven't heard anything back yet.  Hopefully it was a residual hiccup from the server move and not something that's going to happen all the time.  I've still got the support case open.  I doubt I'll hear anything informative, but there's always a chance that somebody there knows something.

Going by the error message there is a number of possible things going on:

1. SQL server is on the same machine as the apache that serves this forum.
1.a) SQL server crashes due to mis-management or overload. Overload may either be high user numbers or concerted attack, or other site on same machine if shared.

2. SQL server is on different machine.
2.a) SQL server not reachable due to bad routing or network equipment in data center.
2.b) SQL server crashes due to mis-management or overload. Overload may either be high user numbers or concerted attack, or other site on same machine if shared.

Either way Toady, if you're paying, you should press them for an answer. ESPECIALLY so if you did not explicitly pay for a shared machine or database.

The support person got back to me today.  Apparently they had "too many connections", and this has been "resolved".  Perhaps after the server move they had crammed too many people in the same place.  In any case, maybe things will be smoother now.

My theory is this (Alright it isn't a real theory... it is a joke... an unfunny joke)

Tech Guy: "Alright Mr. Toady so you want a forum put up. What will you be hosting? Porn, Youtube videos, Chuck Noris jokes?"

Toady: "A Freeware Videogame that I've been making at my house for a few years"

Tech Guy: "Really? alright then well we can have it up in a day."

Toady: "Very well then good bye"

*Checks Bandwidth allowance*

Tech Guy: "Well No one could possibly be interested in this... Lets put it at fifty... Maybe seventy five at christmas incase an extended family decides to patronise his game"

*Later at the hall of justice*

Superman: "What the heck!?! Samurai, I can't load this up can you fix it?"

Samurai: "Just because I am Japanese why do you assume I know anything about computers?"

Superman: "Are you kidding? This is a 60s cartoon of COURSE your an expert in computers... Look your reprogramming Bizarro's Evil Pacman game while we are speaking"

Samurai: "Wait, weren't you eaten by a Kryptonite Pacman that episode?"

Superman: "Ohh yeah... Remember when Bizarro was cool and stupid instead of weird and stupid?"

Samurai: "Hello, we are still in the 60s... Bizarro is still cool and stupid."

Superman: "Alright well I gotta go save Lois Lane by marrying her off to the Joker or something"

Samurai: "You do that"

Toady: "WHY ISN'T MY SITE WORKING!!!"

The end

I wrote them back after the last outage and got the predictable "it was working when I tried to load the page" which sort of misses the point.  I'll have to try to bump it up a support level if it happens again.

Eh, that is typical. Basically they don't care too much about this..what a surprise. [I guess that they could check out the server logs and look for errors?] Ah well...  :-X
