Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Edit: OH SHIT THE RIVER FROZE.  DIG DIG DIG!

It froze 10 days into mid winter, so I estimate I can get 10 days of work in.  Move my minions work faster!

God this was a slap in the face as I JUST activated my screw pumps right before the water froze.

Unless you seal up your tower completely and never have any contact with the world outside, I suspect the number of casualties from releasing the river to wipe out a siege will be several times higher than if you just fought the siege off yourself.

Whether or not this is a "flaw" is entirely a matter of perspective.

Tower entry point on a higher level then flood.  Win.

18th of mid winter.  2 days left but I'm crossing my fingers I can get it done without my dwarfs being flooded to death.

. . .aaaand YES!  It unfroze on the 22nd.  I had 11 days of work to get it done and I finished it on the 10th day. . . wait a minute, whats my woodcut- oh god.  OH NO!

Edit:  I would like to relay a discovery.  I've put an entire wall across the major river and it isn't stopping water flow.  To me more precise:  The water "spawns" it doesn't "flow"  so building a dam was pointless.  The water just spawns on both sides of the dam if removed by screw pumps etc.

What constructions prevent water spawning in its square?

I thought water spawns at one edge and gets sucked up at the other edge?

Don't you have river source tiles?  Or am I thinking of a different water flow?

Maybe for performance reasons major rivers are different?

So, when it freezes in winter, what happens if you mine out ice squares?  Does water magically appear?

Does ice designated as indoors melt?

Can you build a ceiling over three tiles of ice, wait until the rest melts, then mine out the center plane of ice?

Wait a second.

Are those channels feeding into the river or draining it?
If the river flows west to east, and the channels feed in, putting in a dam at the location shown won't do anything on its own.

I suppose in the worst case scenario you need to turn a river tile into "open space" with tweak.

I was too lazy to add the red marks to show that I was going to block those as well.

What I mean is, if all you've blocked so far is the major river, you *should* have water spawning on both sides, regardless of whether rivers work by magical water flows appearing (which I don't think is likely, since they shut down in winter) , or water appearing at river sources on the map's edge and sinking into river end tiles.

Are you suggesting water is flowing from the smaller rivers - up - the waterfall to my side of the dam?

P.S.  Ew I hit an Aquifer I didn't realize I had.

You do realize I can't see z-levels in that image...

Piercing the aquifer could definately cause that.

Failing that, try cutting it off at the waterfall itself.  Put in floors underneath, have a hanging dam.
