I'm worried that you might accidentally overload the awesome counter on your world and hit the Age of Flaming Death, but I see no flaw other than that.

Can you upload it when you're done? We all want to gawk.

This will be epic, epic fail or epic win.  Regardless I'll post the results.

Only problem I see is that water usually doesn't overflow if you block up a river, so depending on how you have your floodgates set up, it may or may not overspill (and you may be left with a "flood" that just reaches the normal levels and a dry moat most of the time).

Yea, the only thing I'd say could go wrong would be if river behavior decides to hiccup on you.

Or, you know, CPU heat death.

He can hook up one of the floodgates to a pressure plate to allow a trickle through.

It looks like there is a waterfall already, so getting more z levels shouldn't be a problem.  What are you going for, a rushing wall of liquidy death for sieges?  Is this a brook crossing a river?

What I have is a major river waterfall with 2 creeks connected on the sides.  I've just done the math, If I set it up how I plan I'll have 111 flood gates opening at once releasing their water plus the amounts already received from the waterfall.

At the tower side the water walkway will be ramped upwards to the top floor to avoid the flood.

If all else fails I'll link pressure plates to bridges along the walkway to dump unwelcome things into the water.

You will die and have all of your dwarves tantrum spiral in a horrible and unforseen way. My bet is 30 dollars on carp spontaneously generating right after you open the floodgates around your tower.

I hear you can use a drawbridge instead of masses of floodgates. But I'm not clear that it will work for more than one Z-level.

Single tile wide drawbridge in the up position?  might save on mechanisms, but is it worth the lag?

My screw pumps are nearly ready to start pumping (autumn first year.)  It'll allow me to place the first two pieces of the dam. . . out of 19.  However It's just a matter of shuffling the equipment along the river after that.

In other news, the dwarven liason has arrived. . . on the wrong side of the river.  Him and the traders are being harassed by thief's

ROFL  there was a fox interrupting my wood cutters constantly.  So I recruited one to chase the fox down, however the fox cleverly ran past some deer and the recruit decided to bull rush the deer instead.  He just pitched the deer into the god damn river.

If I were less lazy, that would earn a 300 parody sketch with stick figures. "This is Dwarf Fortress!"
