Question: Separate Soldiers from the rest ?
« on: October 11, 2008, 07:45:14 am »

Hey guys,
I have a question: Is there any way to seperate my military dwarves from the rest of the fortress ?
I've build barracks/a sparring room and also an own dining room for them and assigned a table for every soldier so that they wouldn't eat in the "official" dining room. Plus: I placed a few stockpiles in the military dining room so that they wouldn't leave the place to get food.
However, they still leave to visit the meeting hall or the zoo or whatever. Is there anyway to keep them inside their little micro cosmos ? Something I can do with doors or areas ? If i just locked them up, there wouldn't be anybody filling up their stockpiles and they would starve..

Any ideas ?

You can fill their stockpiles by making a garbage zone over a hole in the floor, then designating food/drink barrels for dumping.  After the food falls down into the military area, reclaim it so they can eat it.

Lock them up and use a water-based elevator/delivery system?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The idea is that the water from the cistern will push whatever you had designated to dump to your barracks. However, it will require some micromanagement. You'll have to dump the items first, then close the floor hatch, open the grates and open the floodgate. When it's been pushed to the desired level, close the grates, and close the floodgate. And lastly open the floor hatches to drain the water and have her ready for another go. This should also work as an elevator, but instead of dumping the goods inside, station a dwarf on a grate and have him blast into outer space.

NOTE: I have never tested this. It should work, but I have no evidence that it will work. Should you choose to try this one out, I'd be glad to hear the results.

it would be difficult kidiri, as there is no flow in 7/7 water tiles and thus nothing gets pushed.

it would be difficult kidiri, as there is no flow in 7/7 water tiles and thus nothing gets pushed.

Widening the waterway will solve this, but then it will have lower chances of the item getting where it's needed. I guess you could also have the garbage dump somewhere underneath the main shaft (this was my original idea, but I've adapted it to fit these needs).

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This should solve the 7/7 problem, but only if the dump site is underneath the destination. This design holds (also, the previous, I only forgot to mention it) the risk of flooding your fort. To make sure your fort doesn't, have the shaft open up to Z=0, build walls around the hole and construct a grate over the hole. Link it up to a lever if want to use the elevator as an executional device.

To use it as an elevator, build grates on every floor. When moving a dwarf up to a certain level, pull the levers between the level he is in and the one above the destination. When he has arrived, pull the levers again and stop the flow. He will (safely) land and walk to his destination.

You could do an airlock design, lock a few peasants (Siege Operators/Hunters in plate&shield) in with the soldiers. Build a room with floodgates/doors on either end controlled by levers. Set stockpiles for food and booze in there, fill them with take from pile function and close the civilian side door with a lever. Then open the other doors with a lever and set a stockpile to take stuff from the airlock. The siege operators will haul the stuff to a stockpile and you can reset the doors. Takes minimal micromanagement

Either the airlock method mentioned above or the drop-food method, where the soldiers are isolated one level below with no access to the outside other than the door to go fight goblins and the food stockpile that is refilled from above.

I believe you can set military dwarves only to go outside, solving at least having civilians in the above ground barracks.

Yes, but this causes cave adaptation problems.

I don't really care about cave adaptation unless my fortress is cut by a surface chasm.  I can have recent immigrants cut logs and gather plants if I ever need them.
