...And it's scaring me.

This is one of them:



He's made more like these, goblins shooting humans, elves striking down humans, humans shooting humans, demons killing humans... and all these are in my dwarf’s bedrooms.

I copied the save over to another DF to check him in legends, he was from an unknown parentage, born in 982, and this is the only fortress he's ever been in so he wasn't from my last fortress. But then I looked at the engravings in adventure mode:



This is the war that happened:



So apparently my dwarf knows about a war that happened in 141, and made an engraving of a demon hitting a human's toe. I wonder how does he know about all this? It happened 841 years before he was born...

Am I the only one who gets engraving of wars that happened hundreds of years ago? Is this normal?

Its been passed down in legend... All the dwarves know about the story of the demon that smashed that one guy's toe. Its like, dwarven pop culture, man.

Dwarves are hopelessly obsessed with minor things.  This is why they plant a single seed at a time, run from groundhogs, and create depictions of some guy's toe getting hurt in the dawn of time.

You can change the init files so that you can see the history of engravings in fortress mode you know. Then you can see engravings of all his toes being smashed, one by one.

How the bloody hell do you guys keep getting engravings this damn awesome? Until I have a few billion sieges under my belt, all I get are the same two or three generic carvings repeated endlessly. And this is with as pimped and specialized an engraver as I can manage.

My dwarves are all uneducated, historyless rednecks.

Also, I demand that Spoggerific's stonghold be titled the official spring break capital for all dwarfkind.

my dwarfs make 99 of 100 engravings about the creating of the fort or praise the expedition leader (also from first year)
the other 1 is maybe about an artifact, an masterfull engraving (sometimes redundant) or a killed goblin

No, you are not the only one thankfully. I've seen something like this many times. Toady is just plain awesome. He cares about every little details.

All of you guys are so lucky.  I just get the last set of traders to come through, or a seed laying on a nearby floor (my dining room is covered with plump helmet spawn, and engravings of plump helmet spawn) or the last plant the engraver harvested. (once I got a masterwork of the engraver engraving, that was pretty cool)

One of my recent forts is filled with engravings of demons killing elves.

Needless to say, that engraver gets a nice bedroom.

in my last fortress, at bout the 4th year gobbos decided to ambush the dog i had chained to my entrance.....i didnt know if it killed one or not but it died, from then on, my engravers engraved of dogs laughing and goblins making plaintive gestures.....its great
