[40d] Perpetual burning when turning TEMPERATURE from NO to YES
« on: October 08, 2008, 01:17:12 pm »

As the title says: I'd been playing with TEMPERATURE set to NO for framerate reasons, but in order to play with my lava trap, I set it to ON.

Two of my miners immediately caught on fire.  In both cases, their feet go to red instantly.  None of their clothing is on fire.  If I use Tweak or DFCompanion to heal them, their feet go to red again immediately.

They smoke, which is amusing.  The temperature of the tiles they enter goes to 10354.

It seems like at some point while temperature was off, they got marked as catching on fire (maybe playing with magma), but it only now takes effect now that temperature is turned on.

If temperature is off, and they touch magma, they won't burn.
When you turn temperature on, they do.
They can BE a temperature without it having an effect (while temperature is off..  it only affects the results of the temperature)

So what happens if you stick the dwarf in water before turning temperature on? I'd guess the water turns to steam and the dwarf dies in the heat. Worth trying, anyway.

So I teleport them into the river.  They're fine as long as they remain in the river (drowning notwithstanding).  There's no steam.  When they exit the river, they combust again.

If I set the temperature of the tile that to 7000, they themselves will continue to burn, but other dwarves who pass by will die from the cold.

That is, these dwarves seem to be *set* to a certain temperature irrespective of what goes on around them.

Have you tried looking at their equipment? Aren't they covered by magma?

That would be it. I had miners who struck magma and when I turned it on, they burst into flames. They had magma coverings which caused it.

I thought that might be it, but no -- none of their equipment is on fire, and they're covered by mud and vomit (and quite a lot of vomit at that), but no magma.

Unless magma shows up as mud for some reason?  Or doesn't show at all?  I'll try dumping their equipment and seeing what happens.

(Remembering that it's their feat that burn, I checked their equipment, too -- it's covered in blood and mud and vomit, but no magma that I can see.)

I had a similar case of spontaneous dwarfen combustion.  No gear listed as on fire, both feet red, running and smoking.  Happened after I turned temperature back on. He might have touched magma at one point at th every start, but I don't know for sure.

Slight update: it turns out that if I set up a drowning chamber, put the miners in it, save, turn on temperature, start the game, and immediately flood the chamber, they're fine (well, no feet and drowning, but other than that...)  Seems that there's code that's triggered upon them entering the water that'll put out the fire that's bypassed if they're simply teleported into the water.
