I'd be interested to know how artifact modifiers effect things like attack speed, and chance to hit (no point have 50x iron damage if you never hit something with it :P)

AFAIK no such modifiers apply.

I should point out that you won't be able to use an aluminum battle axe, unless they fixed the bug since the last version. I had an aluminum warhammer and my dwarves would not use it, it showed up on "crafted goods" instead of weapons, and they would totally ignore picking it up even when locked in a room with just that weapon stockpiled there.

I've heard they won't wield artifacts until they reach champion level.  I have two champions wielding artifact iron maces in 40d.

Artifact gives a bonus of somewhere around x10
Source? No trying to be a jerk, just interested in this question and would love to see some proof, even if it's only combat testing in semicontrolled circumstances.

I don't think anyone really knows how much of a modifier artifact quality provides...  The standard estimates seem to be either x5 or x10.  I personally think that x5 is the most likely.

Only my memory I fear. I can't even remember who said it, but we've had the artifact bonus conversation before.

High quality armor was perfectly capable of stopping firearm fire into the napoleonic era.  Armor was generally considered "proof" at that point in history.  For instance "proof against pistol fire at five feet" would be tested to protect it's wearer from such fire.

This "high quality armour" would not have been aluminium. The only armour actually worn in Napoleonic era was breastplates on heavy cavalry, and that was for protection against sabre cuts.
