Artifact Aluminium Axe - What to do with it?
« on: October 07, 2008, 03:50:18 am »

One of my dwarves recently made this:

Alathtilesh - an artifact aluminium battle axe.

Its base value is 193200. I haven't modified it in any way yet(if such is possible).

Being that its made from aluminium I imagine it'd have fairly junky damage... I haven't tested it because I think the axedwarf that gets it won't let it go...

In terms of what to do with it, should I....

* Just sell it and use my now legendary weaponsmith to makes masterwork steel axes?
* Encrust it with diamonds to get a 12 million value item and get seiged?  ;D
* Give it to a strong axedwarf anyway?

Thanks for the help!

Edit: Heres a SS:

You can't do 1 or 2, so i'd say 3. Of course, if your concerned about it, just put it in a vault or something, and encrust your masterwork steel battle axes with the gems for extra bling.

Give it to an axedwarf. The quality of construction will counteract the crappy material. Plus its lightweight  ;D

Plus its lightweight

Ronnie Coleman style or just light in weight?

Edit, i can imagine that. "LIGHTWEIGHT!" *goblin in multiple bits goes flying out the enterance*.

I like the attention to detail the artificer put on, making sure to put an image of an aluminum axe on the aluminum axe so it was clearly labelled.

Got any rooms that need some extra value? Want a Royal Diningcloset? (Yep, weapon traps contribute to room value)

According to the wiki:

-Aluminum is half the strength of iron.
-Masterful quality adds a x2 multiplier to the weapon (it didn't say anything about artifacts)

I'd say your axe will do either roughly the damage of a no-quality iron axe, or a bit more than that.

The best use for it would probably be to add to room value.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Clearly the only option is to create a full set of aluminum armor and outfit a dwarf like Napoleon's guard.

IIRC an artifact has an damage modifier of 5. So it'll to 2,5 times the damage an iron axe would, that's somewhere around the amount a masterwork steel axe would do. So it's still better than most other axes. I'd personally horde it, but I build massive stockpiles of valuables and high end metal bars just for my horde. One day I'll break the game with an impossibly wealthy fortress.

say, how does the math compare with an artifact goblin bone short sword to a masterwork obsidian short sword?

Obsidian is as good as steel, so the latter is almost certainly more powerful.  But what could possibly be better than carving a path through a horde of goblins with a goblin bone sword?

Bone is 50% quality, but an artifact gives a very high multiplier so it's at least as good if not better, really.

Indeed, the exact modifier is unknown to anyone but toady, but most agree that the artifact nature of it makes it equivalent to an iron masterpiece or so.

Yes, I had a fort that produced masterwork obsidian shortswords, then an artifact golden shortsword.  I came back as an adventurer to test them out on some goblins.  The artifact gold sword seemed to hit more often, but the stone sword did far more damage when it connected.

Napoleon's Guard wore French army uniforms and bearskin hats. What exactly are you thinking of?
