I need ways to destroy my fortress.
« on: October 07, 2008, 01:58:52 am »

I need ways to destroy it because it's getting really boring. 93 dwarves and no problems at all, goblins siege every now and again but that's it.

I have no demon pits, I have a magma pipe and an underground river, no dangerous wildlife, no goblins I could let loose. (I do have a room with about 30 cats/kittens in it though  :P)

Anyone have any good ideas on how to destroy it?

build supports atop supports for some 10z levels up, and place a single floor tile and lever on this, repeat for every dwarf.  use non-supportive tiles for access, like hatches.  Attach levers to supports. Set all levers to Pull/R.  Try to keep the survivors alive for as long as you can.

Abandoning it might work. Or if you *really* want to destroy it, delete the region in your save folder  :P

Lock the front door.

Forever.

See how long you can keep them alive without ever going to the surface, or allowing traders to come in to visit.

You think this will be easy.

It will not be.

But it will be easy.

Edibles won't be an issue. So long as he has a single plump helmet spawn he can grow food and provide alcohol forever.

Need wood? He has access to an underground water supply. Just build a tower-cap farm and there you go.

That very same underground river provides him with a nice variety of fish and other meats, in addition to water should he ever have an injured Dwarf.

Apart from those I can't imagine any other thing a Dwarf needs that can't be mined out or made out of stone.

Lock the front door, while everyone's outside.  Watch as they struggle for survival by beating each other to death and chasing after vermin.

Recruit all your dwarves into the military, remove all of their armors and weapons, send them out naked when the next goblin siege will hit your fortress. That's what I did, and it was endless fun.  ;D

Despite the fragility and setbacks, a well-setup dwarven fortress can take a lot.  I recently tried this...erm, experiment...with my latest fortress.  I stationed all military dwarves (25 or so of my 210 dwarves) into a room and collapsed the ceiling.  Four survived, and they were all unhappy due to losing friends.

There are a number of tantrums, and I think 3 or 4 other dwarves died due to those, but only one of the champions ends up going berserk, in the legendary dining room.  Despite wearing artifact armor, he's brought down by a passing hunter with a crossbow after killing only 2 or 3 other dwarves.

Disappointed, I collapse one of my towers, killing another 40 dwarves or so.  And when the siege appeared, I didn't order the dwarves inside, and didn't station my three remaining military -- just sat and watched.

It was brutal, but I only lost another 40 dwarves.  The fortress seemed to stabilize around 90, and kept right on humming.

The lesson I took from this is that once a fortress gets "mature", destroying it really takes active malevolence.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

Alright, so leave everybody inactive in some meeting hall for several seasons. This should make them good friends. Once they have become sufficiently buffed from stats, collapse something on top of them. Make sure it is a small collapse, because you want them to start with outbursts of violence.

That or just remove everything that makes them happy. Make only one food source, and don't cook it. Remove all chairs, tables and beds. Situate a barracks from a single bed near some active workshops, and make sure you produce as much miasma as you can. Cave-in smoke for whatever other reasons you want. Slaughter their pets.

They can't be ecstatic forever! Also, take away every piece of furniture that above no quality as possible.

Make a magmafall over the entrance.

Yeah man, that's no joke.  I had an outside fort of ~150 I tried to destroy one day by shoving everyone into a spike pit and Pull Lever R.

A lot of dwarves died.  More were critically injured.  There was even some rioting but it never reached critical mass.  I ended up with a population of about 70, but if I really wanted to I would have been able to continue the fort without major problems.
