Silly question
« on: October 06, 2008, 10:53:39 pm »

Alright, I just started playing Dwarf Fortress, and I have a question. I'm figuring out how to deal with my lack of */+-, but right now, I'm trying to get my woodcutter to, well, cut wood. DO his job, in other words. And he doesn't, he just stands around a bunch of barrels picking his nose. I slated several trees for cutting, but he just doesn't want to coperate. So what am I not doing right? EDIT: I already checked around and searched, and if this is answered somewhere, sorry.

Oh, and yay for these forums and my hole in the mountain.

Is woodcutting turned on in his v -> p -> (L)abor menu? Carpentry and Woodcarving/crafting/whatever don't count.

Does he have a battle axe in his v -> (i)nventory? If not, do you have one at all?

Did the trees actually turn brownish when you designated them? (something you can only see when the designate window is up).

Yep, they were brownish. I'll check his inventory, forgot about axes. And it turns out I was looking at the woodworking Dwarf.. The cutter is Mork-knows-why down southwest of everyone else.
EDIT: Problem appears to be that he lacks axe. Will now work on procuring him one. And getting him back to "civilization"

also, youre not trying to multiclass him as a miner, are you?  miners and woodcutters are both required to wield an item (picks or axes) and thus you can only be one or the other at any given time.

you can toggle between the jobs through the labor menu of the dwarf in question, but you can only have one on at a time.

No, he's just a woodcutter (well, /wrestler, but that's beside the point). Still trying to get him that axe. He is now content to sit north of everything. Maybe he's injured. To the status menu!

Mkay...now he's standing around in a pool of blood, laughing over a corpse. Yay.

Is he in the military right now? Because, military dwarves won't do any 'normal' jobs. I only mention this because you said something about wrestling skill.

I activated him briefly so he could make the trip home (lots of ratmen)m\, and pick up an axe (deactivate him ,and woo, he has an axe now). Worked great till he was attacked, and cancelled the order. He then proceeded to head north, kill another ratman, and now stands there, a humble woodcutter, in a pool of blood over a corpse.

In short: No, he isn't military right now.

EDIT: Making progress, he's back at camp (to drink. Yay beer?).  Now to wrangle my brain around the controls to get him the axe, heh.

EDIT EDIT: Is there any way I can just tell him to pick up the axe? For whatever reason, I can't select "Woodcutting" as a job preference for him, presumably because he has no axe, or because I lack the precious +-*/.

You should be able to enable Woodcutting, axe or no axe.

I'm assuming you lack +-*/ because you're playing on a laptop (or something) with no numeric keypad. If that is the case, you can (and should!) change your key bindings as per the wiki (here). Hope that helps! :)

Why have you not got those keys? Playing on a laptop with no keypad? You know you can get USB keypads pretty cheap? Sick of short questions? Would you like a biscuit?

Yea, playing on a laptop. I'll take your sugestion Snappy, and change my bindings. In the meantime, I decided to just scrap the fortress. A botched irrigation channel after dealing with The happy slaughter woodsman (yes, in his description it said he'd gotten a taste for slaughter), I just felt like starting over would be easier.

Ok, fun new question. How do I dig downwards? I've been reading Dwarfortresswikki, and it says to build an upward stairway directly underneath a downward stairway tile. However, when I try to do that, it just tells me that it's a "hidden" tile. I managed to do it once before, but that involved channels and a cave in.

Are you building, or digging a downwards stair? If digging, make sure the upwards stair is directly below it.

Currently I'm just trying to build the stairs so I can start digging down below.
Just tred digging, that appears to have fixed the problem, thanks. I wonder if having a fortress named "Hallscalded" is a bad omen. Oh magma, wherefore art thou?
